I've never played them, but both my sons, combat veterans, have the game and think it's great.

Yes, both sons went to war with the 1st Marine Division, one went to Afghanistan in 2010 and was involved in the Sangin fight, the other to Iraq during the start of the surge 2006-2007, IIRC, and did a deployment to Africa with a 2d Division MEU later. I served in both the Marine Corps (8 years, nine months) and then did 4 in the Army. My brother, father, his brother (my uncle) and their uncle, were also Marines.

You were in 3/6? What years? My brother was in 1/6 when Col. Fox was commanding. Who were you with in Hawaii?

I haven't played Arma but the boys have been all over me to try it. Say it's great. It is multiplayer from what I understand, not sure if there's a single player version.

I was in 82-90 ..the overall barracks was Marine Barracks Hawaii [or Pearl H ], of which there were 5 stations [ companies ]...I was with Guard Co Wahiawa, a small, navcom base [ was called NAVCAMSEASTPAC <>naval communication area master station eastern pacific, I think? ] HA..they call it something different now.....I really don't like to talk about Hawaii, since it was really tough and horrible    I think most of them are gone, or use ''civilian'' guards except maybe Westloch, since they guard the nukes...82-86 barracks, 86-90 3-6, half of that detached to UNITAS on South America float<>great float!!!! actually, did bootcamp fall of 82, got to Hawaii after infantry school in 83...I forgot what we called it, I S on the end??? I just searched it, I think we did call it SOI...long time ago..just wore the uniform out to dinner for my wedding anniversary and I think it fits better than ever!! I'll try to send the pic

So was my uncle Charlie, my dad's brother, he made Pusan, Inchon, Seoul and the Reservoir, at Hagaru-ri on a heavy machine gun crew. It is a small world. Who was your dad with? I'm reading three books on the Reservoir right now and discussing it with my dad just about every day. IIRC, another member here, Devil Dog had a brother that was a Navy Corpsman at the Reservoir with 1st Marines.

When I went it was ITR (Infantry Training Regiment) and ITS (Infantry Training School), then at the time they also had ICT (Initial Combat Training, which basically became the Crucible without the Emblem ceremony at the end) at bootcamp. It has since been re-named and somewhat re-configured, ITR became SOI (School of Infantry). They oversee ITB (Infantry Training Battalion, MCT (Marine Combat Training--a 30 day extended version of the old ICT, for non-infantry MOS Marines) and AITB, Advanced Infantry Training Battalion). The East Coast school is still located at Camp Geiger (for the non-Marines out there Camp Geiger is a part of the larger Camp Lejeune Base Complex).
Another thing that has changed is that at PI they we (and probably you) used to have the Elliot's Beach EST, (Essential Subject's Testing). That too has been re-configured. As I understand it they do EST at the recruit all-weather training facility, and the hump and bivouac have been rolled into the Crucible.

Here's Uncle Charlie's picture, when the Division got back to Hungnam.

ARMA II is mostly modern (focusing on Marine and Russian forces) with developer made standalones for the American army, British Armed Forces, Private Contactors and a few others. The game isn't just multiplayer based, it does have a single player character driven story that has multiple endings to the campaign. There are a heap of user made WW2 mods that include vehicles and weapons but they can be a pain to install. Although there is a T-34-85, Lee Enfield and a PPSH 41 in the base game (and that all I can remember off the top of my head since it has been years since I have played the game)
