new here!! looking for info about my granddad and his squadron 106

hey im new here looking for info on my grandad he was in raf 106 sqd in the war (ww2) looking for any info on that and anyone who might of known him or his crew plane anything would be helpful thanks george thornborrow i think.. his number is159 51 43

Thanks for your help he survived sadly died just before I was born I have his long book and stuff from the RAF but I'm after knowing more like how to find out his aircraft code and such I'm a beginner at this though thanks so far

 

A good start would be to find out dates of enlistment. This would allow to find out which type of Lancaster he flew. Once we know that then we can find the serial number and then possible the call code .

 

He enlisted on the 23rd august 1943 I know he trained in Anson's and then wellingtons then lancs I'm waiting on the return of his logbook as well thanks

Welcome Johnny! This is a great site. I have only been here a couple of days and have learned so much! The people here are so great and so helpful.

 

Your Grandfather most likely flew Lancaster Is or IIIs with 106 from Metheringham ( they moved there from Syerston in November 1943 ). The logbook will show which aircraft he flew in ( it should show the final letter of the three-letter code against each op ).

You may well have already visited ( I'm not sure where you're from ) but there is a very good, small museum at Metheringham which is open in the Summer months. The people there will certainly be interested in the logbook and will be able to give you pointers as to further research.

Finally, here's a pic I took at the old airfield in 2009 ; as you can see, a public road now runs where the Lancasters once flew.....



One last little-known fact - 106's first Commanding Officer on Lancasters ( before your Grandfather's time with them ) was Guy Gibson of 'Dambuster' fame.

 

Thanks that's brilliant I know he was yes my grandfather had told my mum he met him not sure where ha I'm in Lincoln so not far away from all this could you tell if I take a PIC when I get it back ? Thank you for your help !!!

 

I'll have to go look in summer sound like you would definitely know more from his log book than me so I'll take a picture

The airfield itself is a very evocative site, and I believe there are plans to try to rebuild the old, ruined control tower there.
