This translates to: "Air Medal General Order 289 Headquarters (s/b HQ, not Hg) 3rd Bombardment Division July 14th, 1944, Oak Leaf Cluster to Air Medal General Order 651 Headquarters 3rd Bombardment Division Sept. 20th, 1944"

Hello To All , Great news today !! We found more info on dad :) mainly what we have been searching for . Dad served with the 390th Bomb Group H 8TH Air Force . He was a Waist Gunner on 8 planes and was on 11 missions . The plane that he was on that got ditched was the Blues in the Night B-17 . He was not the only survivor as the story was told to us . The pilot was KIA and the rest of the crew were scattered in the water , they all were picked up and survived . Here is a list of the bombers my dad was on : Blues in the Night , Heavenly Sent , Purdy Baby , Bomb Bay , Chaff Wagon , De Joker , The Jennie Bee and Songoon . I am so grateful for all the help , tips and advice you all gave me :) I couldn't have done this without you all !! Saying the words " thank you " just doesn't seem enough :( I will stay in touch from time to time :) I wish you all well !! Sincerely , Debbie Carpenter

That is great news, Debbie. Digging always helps and becomes kind of addicting. There are people here who will be able to tell you what those specific planes were and what they did. Keep looking You never know what you'll discover.

If yu do a search for the 390th Bomb Group WW2, you'll find images that you can peruse at your leisure.

Hello Lou , I am so frustrated !! Thought we had found more info on dad but I think it is wrong :( I don't think the info in my previous post is correct ? I got the info from another site , the 390th Interactive Library . There is a Thomas J Carpenter that comes up listed as a waist gunner , did 11 missions on 8 planes in the year 1944 . The last 3 missions has him as a bombadier /togglier . When I looked through the crew lists I could not find him or his crew number ? When I searched the 390th with his serial no. nothing came up ? Very frustrating to say the least :( I just don't believe there could be 2 Thomas J Carpenters with the same dates ? How ironic would that be !! I don't understand why he comes up on the one search but does not come up with his serial number ? Any suggestions ? Also we tried to scan the discharge paper and it would not scan . The photo place thinks it is to old and faded and the scanner is not picking it up ? I am going to try and copy it at the library then take a photo of that and hopefully I can post it that way . I was wondering if you are on facebook or if I can post pics from my facebook albums to here ? Hope to talk to you soon :) Thanks , Debbie

I also found a Thomas J Carpenter on the 390th website. They have him in the 571st Bomb Squadron. You might try contacting them for the source of information which they used. I also found a Thomas J Carpenter on the American Air Museum in Britain website. Looks to be the same fellow. They might be another one to contact.

Hello Lou , Just checking in to see if anyone has looked over dads separation paper ? Still wondering if all the previous info we have found is correct ? Still trying to find out where he was after he left England in Nov 1944 to Nov 1945 when he was discharged . Tried searching for him at Lowry Field with no luck . Also did some searching on the plane Blues in the Night and the crash of June 21st 1944 . It came up as the Cinncinatti Queen and there was a Thomas J Carpenter on the crew list . It says the pilot Dinsmore was killed and the rest of the crew was POWs ? I don't think that information is correct . Very confusing trying to figure out all this info !! Hope to here from you soon :) Debbie

Hello Poppy , Thanks for adding me :) I to like the bike in the photo !! From the research I have been doing; I found out the bikes were popular in England . The base in Framlingham where we think my dad was stationed with the 8th Air Force used them to get around especially to go to the small town in Framlingham . The American GI s bought a bike as soon as they got there ! I saw a video about the air base in Framlingham on youtube and it talked about the bikes . I love collecting antiques and things from the 40's and 50's . That bike would sure be nice in my collection :) We should try and find one !

Lou , Don't worry about it :) I think I have found enough info on dad from all your help here and from other sites :) I found one of dads sisters today and we talked on the phone . She is 88 and still pretty sharp God bless her !! She told me some things about dad that match up with what we have found so far . She is going to look for some photos and letters she has from dad and send them to me . I cant wait to see them :) She served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War 2 and she has some interesting stories to tell about that time . She did tell me that one of the planes dad was on was shot down by the germans and they crashed into the sea . I will keep you posted on anything I learn from our aunt . :) I will still check in from time to time and you can email me if you find out anything new from dads discharge paper :) Once again thanks for all your help !! Sincerely, Debbie

That's good news, Debbie. Whatever you find out, please keep us posted. You know much more now than you did when you started. If you have any trouble scanning and posting, let me know. Good luck!
