Is it worth is $25.00? I gotta admit, I'm pretty broke, so a book I buy must have it's worth! It looked good in Boarders, so I thought I'd ask about it, see if it had any type of Rep, or this author's rep.
Afraid I can't recommend this one at full price, Sgt. I'm very interested in the Bulge and recently saw this at reduced price - I still didn't buy. Author Kershaw has written various books including a biography of war photographer Robert Capa which I read and found to be readable, but shallow and with no real insight into Capa's character. Reviewers have levelled the same criticism at this one. It's a great, true story but it could have been done much better - and the military detail is poor, too. If I were you, I'd save my money and go for an established Bulge classic such as MacDonald's 'A Time For Trumpets' or 'Company Commander'.....
Ok, that sounds good. I took a trip to my local library to come upon Toland's Battle: Story of the Bulge. Not to bad so far, about 10 pages in.
John Toland's book was the first one I ever read about the Bulge. Although his style is a little journalistic and not as in-depth as later historians, he did have the benefit of interviewing many combatants at first-hand. It's still a vivid description of the battle and conveys the drama of many of the events very well.
