New here. Just found it. Both my grandfathers were in WW2. Fathers dad was 1st Infantry Army. Omaha Beach to the Battle of the Bulge. Moms dad was a 1st Infantry 5th regiment Marine who fought on Peleliu and Okinawa. BAR man who is 91 yrs old and still living.
He talks about it with me anytime I ask. Just took him back to Okinawa last summer. As he got older he talked a lot more.
Welcome to the Forum. If you haven't done so already, be sure to document his oral history. The Veterans History Project on the Library of Congress website is a great resource. We also have a section on this Forum for documenting the stories of WWII veterans: What Granddad did in the War.
He will only talk in the bar over some beers. Will not just talk to anyone. Stars and Stripes were supposed to interview him in Okinawa but the writer never showed up to have a few beers. It's not that he is an alcoholic, he just wants to be comfortable. He's an old breed marine. Mans man.
Surreptitiously drop your phone on the table and record him? Thirty years from now you'll be glad you did. I have 6 hours of recording of my maternal grandfather and three of my paternal grandmother. I treasure them both.
Welcome aboard DB. You're fortunate to have someone you can talk to still around. Do whatever you can to record his memories.
I'm on Instagram. Pm me I have a lot of pics and a few videos of him on there. Once I get some real time I will write a little story on him
