Hi, I am searching for the name of the movie that appeared in the cinema recently and in which a british scientist helped uncover the Enigma machine code. I would love to see this movie.

    Thanks for your help!

I thought it an entertaining movie and it motivated me to do quite a bit of reading on the subject afterwards to learn the full, true story. I had a general knowlege of the subject from ancillary sources, but had never studied up on it indepth. That is until after seeing the movie.

The movie, I thought, was quite good. It confirmed for me that Turing was a genius who should have been better treated by society. Fascinating story.

I too thought it was an interesting movie to watch and it also piqued my interest in the real story. Unless it is advertised as a documentary I expect it to be fiction. I found it sad when the last of the UK's machines/early computers was destroyed. It seems like a priceless artifact. I imagine Turning was a key player at Bletchley , not the only key player . It is an ultimate irony, to me anyway, that he was prosecuted the way he was when now the prosecution would be considered criminal in civilized countries today..

Did the Soviets , in fact, have a direct link into Betchley ? I am emrarassed I do not already know this.. I seem to remember we had a thread going on this subject at one time.

Off topic or non working links have been hidden or removed.

I too saw the film recently, reinforced my opinion of Cumberbatch as a excellent actor.

Fred, Belasar and I have hidden your posts at the OP's request as they were off subject. He asked a specific question about a specific movie.

If you want to shotgun a list of movies on the subject, start another thread.

Benedidict Cumberbatch (Alan Turing) made a very good act in the Imitation Game and was rightly nominated for an Oscar in the category "Best leading male actor".

Another enigma related film is the U-571 from 2000, although that story is pure fictional.

Not many people know that a team of young Polish mathematicians were the first to crack the enigma code, but it was for the commercial Enigma, not the military version. There is a Polish film from 1979 about that called "Sekret Enigma". I don't know of any English name for it though.

It should be mentioned that the French cryptographer Gustave Bertrand assisted the young Poles. A lot of the basic information were given to the British, which finally enabled Alan Turing and his team to crack the military code after the machine had been captured by the crew of HMS Bulldog. Also, vital information, such as important code books, had been captured in May 1941 of the German weather ship München, and in June 1941 of the supply ship Gedania and weather ship Lauenburg.

A very good movie with excellent acting, telling an important story that helped to save lives. Awful treatment of Alan Turing by society.

There are many. "Combined Fleet Decoded" by John Prados is a good place to start.

One could say that Joseph John Rochefort was the American equivalent to the treatment of Turing. Rochefort did not play the political games, and his abilities made others jealous of him. Despite being instrumental in breaking Japanese codes, after Midway, he was quickly forced out of code breaking, and giving command of a floating dry dock.
