Atrocities are committed by those who think they won't get caught or that the world won't care. When it came to what happened at Katyn, it could be argued that Josef Stalin was half right.

I met one of the widows of Katyn in 2000. This is her story.

Nothing could me more far away from the truth. The Katyn Massacre is researched and discussed for now more than 75 years! Does anyone here thinks that his death and the circumstances about it will be discussed decades later in forums and that numerous historians will do research about it?

Stalin was addicted to terror in every size and colour, so he needed more and more. After the war, he wanted to kill 50000 german officers.

All these crimes may saved his position for some years but since the late 50ies he is widely regarded as a "monster" and there is nothing to be seen about his achievements in history channel. All his statues disappeared so he is the biggest looser of his terror.

I simply don't understand why Stalin didn't let these officers disappear in GULAGS in Sibiria, where most of them would have died soon.

There is nothing special on Katyn :the prisonners were potentially dangerous thus Stalin decided to eliminate them . What could he do : liberate them ?

THis is not true : he proposed to kill them, besides

1 ) He had no 50000 officers as prisonners

2 ) He killed only a few of those who were captured by the Red Army

Stalin did not kill without reason .

Any killing bothers me. The mass killings by the Germans and the Soviets were especially egregious. I just don't understand how such a thing can happen, no matter who orders it. It still goes on today, and we just accept it. Sad.

The victims were prisoners of war and soviet citizens (Poland didn't exist anymore) and small in numbers compared to what happened later.

What let Katyn stand out of all the other massacres was that it was Stalins order and that he always accused others (Hitler) of the crime. And that they were killed in peace time.

Stalin had a lot of alternatives, the best one would have been sending them to Great Britain. Or just keep them as prisoners. Or hand them over to Germany.

    Nothing special about Katyn?

There were lots of things he could have done up to and including liberating them.

IMO you are coming very close to crossing a line that shouldn't be crossed with the quote above.
