In the shops of a West of England Factory 335mph Hawker Hurricane1 single seater fighters were being produced in great numbers. Some idea of the scale of production of these magnificent machines can be obtained from this view of the assembly bay of the Factory where scores of Hurricanes were taking place. It was in this bay that the completed 990-hp liquid cooled Rolls Royce Merlin III power unit, cockpit unit and fuselage skeleton were first brought together.

Some perhaps Unknown Facts about the Hawker Hurricane 1. There were more Hurricanes in service with the RAF than Spitfires during the Battle of Britain. Almost double the number of Squadrons in fact. The Hurricane was used more as a Bomber destroyer rather than mixing it with the Bf 109 E although in the hands of a skilled pilot it was quite capable of doing so. 2. Hurricanes played an important role during the Desert War. Having been displaced as a front line fighter after the Battle of Britain for Home Defense, Hurricanes were sent to other theatres including the Mediterranean & Far East. During the Desert Campaign the Hurricane found a new lease of life in the guise of the Mk 2 D which was fitted with 2 Underwing 40mm Bofors Cannons and used to devastating effect against Rommel's Afrika Korps Armoured Formations. Earning it the nickname "The Tin Opener" by British & Commonwealth Troops. 3. Hurricanes were the main fighters used in India & the Far East until they could be replaced by later model Spitfires such as the Mk V B, Mk VIII & Mk XIV or the American P47 Thunderbolt but were still in use as late as 1944 during the advance back in to Burma culminating in the last production model the Mk 4 which was the most powerful version built.
