My Gramp told me only a few of his wartime exploits before he past away, the most suprising one is of a sniper on D-Day.

As his unit of Royal Engineers was landing a sniper was shooting the ninth or tenth man in each section as the came off the landing craft. As this was passed back on radio, my Gramp came up with the idea of an 11 man section, 10 off the boat and an 11th to shoot the sniper.

Armed with his enfield he aimed at the general area that the sniper was shooting from. The sniper fired and so did my Gramp, fortunately his aim was better than the snipers.

Later that day he found out that the sniper was a french woman who had become infatuated with a German office and had decided to lend a hand after he was killed.

My Gramp didn't talk much about the war as he lost a lot of friend so I am sure the story is true, so here's to you Sgt Sidney Wilkes.:thumb:

    That is a great story.

it is always nice to hear the true stories of what happened and how it happened. Many dont want to talk about it as it brings too many bad memories up.

The woman is the sniper! I wonder, how many has she got? I bet that this girl has made quite a reputation for herself.
Nice story! We never know who will kill us in the old days.

Wonderful. Just wonderful. The lesser known stories of the War are the ones that make it so interesting. Salute, Sgt Sidney Wilkes:thumb:

It is common to hear that some soldiers didn't like to talk about their expereances of the war. My respects to your grandfather.

That is very good that he picked up that it was the tenth person every time that was getting shot. In all the confusion I don't think I would have figured that one out. Glad to hear that he got the sniper and a women no less. Thanks for sharing.
