Miles Dempsey (1896-1969) Nationality: British. Senior position: Commander Second Army. Final rank: Lieutenant-General. Dempsey, who fought at Dunkirk, was then tasked with raising an armoured division. Thereafter he successfully led the British XIII Corps in latter stages of the North African campaign, in Sicily, and then Italy.
