I'd go with SgtBob, and take both.

Keeping the jeep for at least some missions in certain types of terrain would have probably been a good idea, especially in the urban environment. The Humvee is too big a target for close quarters fighting of that type, IMHO.

Plus there are some streets a Humvee just could not fit in!

You can practically drive a jeep through someone's back yard and out the frontdoor. With the exception of a battery of anti-aircraft missile, I am sure you can mount any 50 caliber, TOW missiles, or even recoiless guns on the Jeep, just like the Hummer.

I went to visit a friend of mine in Sheringham (a town in Norfolk, on the East Coast), and the carnival was on. Part of the carnival was a parade. Part of the Parade was a little collection of military vehicles - including 3 Jeeps. One of these had a whacking great Ford logo embossed on the back!
Sadly I was not able to catch up with the driver/owner to chat about it, and my camera was at home.

Sheringham is near to the Muckleburgh Collection, so it may have come from there...

Ricky, if you see that Jeep with the Ford logo on it again, get ahold of it by any means necessary! Those logoed Jeeps are worth their weight in gold to the right people!

The story on that is, when Ford started producing Jeeps during the war, the company put its corporate logo on the back, just like it was one of their civilian cars. The Army told them to stop it almost immediately, so there are very few of these Jeeps around.

    Lovely to see it, though.

    post subject

have just read something in this subject about
"popping the tyres would disable any wheeled vehicle" or words to that effect. Our armoured cars had "Runflats" on which you could do another 50 miles. Not having been back in an armoured car since 48 I wondered if they still do them?

    Re: Jeeps

That first picture with the converted halftrack looked like an old fashion British Rover?

The "wierdy looking thing" is a Centaur - Land Rover based cross-country vehicle.
At a Farnborough show somewhere around '86 (might have been '84) there was a Humvee with a decent weapons fit - Hydra-70 rocket pod, 4 Stingers, a 7.62mm machine gun and a Mk.19 40mm automatic grenade launcher - in a rotating pedestal in the back. Try fitting that lot to jeep.
    Quote:
Dragon's teeth are concrete oblongs stuck in the ground, designed to 'beach' vehicles - the belly of the vehicle is on the top of the 'tooth' while the wheels/tracks cannot reach the ground. They are deployed several rows deep, to ensure the vehicle gets firmly stuck.
    Unquote:
Nope. if the belly of the vehicle is on top of the teeth and the wheels/ tracks can't reach the ground then how did the vehicle get itself in that position?? Dragon's Teeth are there as "immovable" obstacles, too high and steep to climb, for wheeled vehicles, too far apart for tracked vehicles to run on top of and too close together to go between. They are simply road blocks...

well , technically, the humvee is an improvement of the jeep , you can buy jeeps for a pretty cheap price at an army surplus. Im goin with the humvee

Did we forgot the meaning of HUMVEE (HMMWV)??!!

It means: High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle

    Versions:

    M998 cargo/troop carrier without winch
    M1038 cargo/troop carrier with winch
M966 TOW missile carrier, basic armor, without winch
M1036 TOW missile carrier, basic armor, with winch
M1045 TOW missile carrier, supplemental armor, without winch
M1046 TOW missile carrier, supplemental armor, with winch
M1025 armament carrier, basic armor, without winch
M1026 armament carrier, basic armor, with winch
M1043 armament carrier, supplemental armor, without winch
M1044 armament carrier, supplemental armor, with winch
    M996 mini-ambulance, 2-litter, basic armor
    M997 maxi-ambulance, 4-litter, basic armor
    M1035 soft-top ambulance, 2-litter
M1037 S-250 shelter carrier, without winch
M1042 S-250 shelter carrier, with winch
    M1069 tractor for M119 105-mm light gun

This is a pretty old article, there are alot more now, including that Avenger thing and they are busy with some kind of AMRAAM thing or something, no other country in the world can put missiles of this size on there ''jeeps''

I know (from what I heard from people working with it) that for example the Landrover can't shoot a .50 machinegun when the gun is pointed at either 9 or 3 o'clock, maybe it can give bursts of 4/5 shots, but in no way it can shoot accurate, if its shoots long enough it can flip itself on its side, it can also not handle the mini-gun as the Humvee is already shaking his suspension when shooting that thing...
It can also handle a 40mm grenade-launcher, I would love to see a Landrover or Willy Jeep fire that thing...

I have also heard that those Willy jeeps flipped on there side when they turned around a corner to fast or when they where driving on a steep hill.

Oh, yeah, the AMRAAM. SLAMRAAM, for surface- launched AMRAAM. The clever bit there is that if the US sell SLAMRAAM to a customer the missile has extra lines in the software that make it refuse to launch if the launch platform is moving. That way it stops people buying SLAMRAAM and then fitting them to their fighters.

a few points noticed in the thread

guys- a recoiless rifle is an anittank weapon and a pretty good one when loaded with either heat or squash head round

a hummer is perhaps the best wheeled 4 x 4 made for off road. with the exception of trench crosssing it will go anywhere a M-1 or a Brad will go and a lot of places they will not. here we have a long really bad cross country race called the Baja [ really its in mexico but its an amercian race] that is run by everything from dirt bikes to full out custom racing machines. what wins overall about every year? the hummer. a stock hummer will beat most of the fancy units hands down. maybe not as fast but it rarely has to slow down either and its about as reliable as a tombstone.
i've driven both and the jeep will fit between trees better but the hummer is so much more capable otherwise that's its really apples and oranges.

as to the swimming kubelwagon its really not much of a cross country ride and its not much of a boat either.

there was a series of jeeps that were waterproofed to something like 10 feet when set up with the proper pipes. go driving and scuba diving at the same time. a friend of mine used to have one and he used to drive it around with just his head sticking out of the water.
