    >How about from January 44 with the XIV, less than two months after the P-51 entered operational service with the 8th Air Force.

The "Mighty 8th" was not the only Mustang operator..

The Merlin engined P-51 went operational 1 December 1943 with the 354th Fighter Group..

The 354th Fighter Group, dubbed "Pioneers," started flying P-51B's over France in December, 1943. Originally part of the Ninth Air Force, the 354th was loaned to the Eighth for bomber escort duty. They received their Merlin-powered P-51B's in November, along with the formidable Don Blakeslee as a temporary CO.

    >P38?

Yes, early models heating was improved later.. So.

The pilots wore the same electric flight suits and "woolies" gven B-17 window gunners.. plug in heated suits..

The crappy English 100 gas also caused many of the problems, it was designed to run on US 150 octane.

Tested with 44-1 Fuel. (GRADE 104/150)

By the way, later they authorized 75lbs Hg Mp boost..

Like I said, the Dora 9 could not compete at altitude.

and the Ta152 was never used in its intended role..

JG301(about the only Ta152 operators) mostly flew in the defense of JV44 (Me262) airfields..

and never even got close to a Mustang,.. :smok:

No evidence has yet been found that +25 lbs boost was employed in service by Spitfire XIV squadrons prior to VE day. Even at +25 lbs. the Spitfire XIV still fell short of the sea level performance of the Tempest V and highly boosted Mustangs. There is clear documentation that 2nd TAF Spitfire XIVs had their Griffon engines set to +21 lbs boost. Its also clear that the Griffon engine was eventually approved for +25 lbs maximum combat boost. Although the Spitfire XIV's strength was in the medium and high altitude role, the paucity of Luftwaffe opposition led to the Squadrons engaging in ground attack, where flak was a much larger threat than Me 109s.

Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again: I still think that the Chance-Vought F4U Corsair was the best piston engined fighter of WW2. The Cordsair could do anything the Spitfire or Mustang could do AND operate from a carrier besides. ;) :D

    I love them too..

they did not have a great service ceiling however..

They did have Seafires that could do it off a carrier.

    Corsair blind spot

The Spit was designed as an interceptor fighter tasked with knocking down enemy bombers near or over the UK - hence it's limited range.

The British Fleet Air Arm overcame (by changing either shock absorbers or oleo legs, I think ) the bad tendency of the Corsair to bounce when first touching down on a carrier's deck. They also perfected a curved approach to the carrier deck, thereby negating the huge blind spot imposed by the Corsair's long snoot. When the Brits then designed both the angled landing deck and the mirror aided approach, pretty much ALL of the Corsairs bad deck landing characteristics ( and of other aircraft, too ) were overcome.

yes the rn i think was the first to a land corsair on a carrier deck ..in il forgotten battles pc sim the late model spits can fly rings arround the big draft horse sair and are just as fast ..the spits hispanos are also a big edge over the sairs 6 brownings...but some say the russian deseign team under modeled all us fighters out of cold war spite ....THE P51d IS POSATIVELY a spin stalling undergunned bitch whore that dumps energy with the slightest controll correction AND WHOSE unarmoured merlin windmills to a stop when struck with even a few .30 rounds to be fair tho ,almost all online combat takes place under 10000 feet ( few want to take the time to climb to 30000 where the sky is patrolled by evil long winged fw190s with really huge cannons ...),low alt not the stangs best envelope ..il2 is still the finest pc WW2 combat sim to date imo ....
