I found the book at amazon.uk, and for a fair price as well ( £14 ). I´ll include it in my next order.

Thank you for your recommendation Gerry. :)

Funny, I was always under the impression that Africa was a continent, not a country unto itself; But apparently according to a previous post, you can have African citizenship...

as for the topic, the 366th infantry regiment fought with distinction in the Arno Valley in 1944 on the road to Rome, aswell as fighting north of Rome....

Gregg, as a fellow American I totally agree with you. But heck, I refer to myself as both American AND Texan. So I guess you can be Black and American, but not Black-American, just like I am not Texan-American. America has many different cultures within its borders, but if you are American, thats just what you are, no matter what you may call yourself otherwise.

the us military was not integrated in ww2 ,blacks were called colored people at that time ,in the sixties they called themselves black as in the black power salute .now they prefer african american .

pretending that there are only americans and no other subheadings is just silly and worthless in any discussion about race issues in american history . the us military has been fully integrated for some sixtie years now and racial conflict issues have still not gone away . not in the military and not at home either

.it is ironic how often european or canadian tourists with their sometimes naive assumptions about american culture , are so often the victims of black crime while visiting american cities ..."wait ,please , we are not prejudice ,we come in freindship and good will " ....yea baby , we just need yo wallet ,camera an rental car, and we like your lil frauline , too...

yes , i know ,its not their fault .its slavery and jim crow and economic disenfranchizement and blah ,blah ,blah ...we had a black cheif of staff at the pentagon and we might see our first black president this year .it will change nothing in the perminant, large and hostile ,black crimminal underworld which if anything is stronger than ever with the countrys embrace of hip hop culture ... "pimp my ride " is a hit tv show !

.much of white suburban youth today affects this dress style ,language and even casual violence in its attempt to be like snoop or fifty cent ."wiggers " as they are sometimes called ,.

please be aware that if you visit the usa ,no matter how high minded and noble your attitudes about racial equality ,there are many places where you will be viewed only as a prey animal and victim .you will be pre judged as an easy mark simply because of your skin color and alamo rental car ...you my find yourself a victim of that famous (as seen on tv )american bigotry but it wont be by any southern cigar chomping deputy sherrif or rope carrieing hillbilly rustics .

remember, that reality is mostly just in the movies ,real life racial violence is something that hollywood prefers not to depict , though i can assure you that there are a thousand beaten ,raped or murdered white bodies for every black one that ever swung from a sycamore tree in the bad old missisippi of a bygone era .

america may be legaly integrated but by and large ,americans mostly seperate themselves according to race . in school ,at social gatherings and by where they choose to live .the noble experiment of forced mixing by bussing kids to different school districts was collasal failure .in prisons the only way to keep peace is to have plenty of space to keep the races from being in close proximity while in the yard .never are they locked in the same cage if at all possible .

in my experience its not that blacks were ever excluded or even made to feel unwelcome in the typically larger white group ,its that they made a point of seperating themselves from the mass,in class ,at recess or lunch ,ditto for asians and latinos .it would be nice if we could all the same color in the usa .it surely would give us a lot less hassel and strife .

White is technically considered--in the art-world-- as a "tint." Black is a "shade." Red or yellow is a "color."

Or maybe they took the legal and social seperation from the loooong period before the dawn of Civil Rights in America rather to heart and decided 'screw you guys, I'm going to have my own club too'.

Although saying that, my experience of black students at the University here is that they are very 'clannish' - I was involved in a Disciplinary hearing involving 2 black students, and I heard the phrase 'the black community' so often I wanted to scream.

Seems to me like the problem is a matter of obsession with one's so-called "roots" that drives racial or national minorities to stick together and to indulge in hostile behaviour towards the majority, and that drives the majority to exclude minorities on grounds of difference. There is no real reason why an American family that has lived in the US for hundreds of years should see itself as anything but American, yet minorities of all kinds still wish to see themselves as "African"-American (whatever that is), Italian-American, American-Born Chinese, or simply "Irish". These designations make very little sense to an outsider like myself, who would simply consider all these people American; culturally, they thoroughly are. In fact, many of them would be fish out of water in the country they claim to be from.

There is no such thing in today's world as a country where everyone is of the same colour, but on the other hand, a world where people didn't distinguish each other by the tone of their skin is unlikely to ever exist. One thing that we can do, though, is be more realistic about background; if you were born with the American nationality, why would anyone consider you anything but American?

    .

the history of blacks in the U.S. armed forces start with George Washington enlisting blacks during the valley forge nadir , to the confederate army raising a black regiment in march of 65 ( with the consent of their owners of course )
I disregard the raising , by the British navy !! of a force of " black cossacks " during the 1812 war as they were fighting against the U.S.
first world war , the first U.S. fighting regiment was the Harlem " hell fighters "
and probably the best fighting record belong to a U.S. air force fighter wing called the "red noses",
for political reasons having a black unit was seems as good P.R. and the officer in charge was a sneaky weasel, he argued that it would be counterproductive to have the unit given rubbish equipment and serve in a back water as was the original plan , he got mustangs , picked up college educated , staunchly middle class blacks and had them riding shotgun to the eight air force bombers over Germany
At first the bomber crew were not too hot about having niggers as guardian angels ,
This point of view changed considerably over time due to their excellent performance ,
they ended the war without having lost a bomber to fighter attack !

There were a lot of colored regiments in the US Army during the ACW and afterwards there were colored cavalry regiments during the Indian Wars. It was these who received the nickname "Buffalo Soldiers".

The "Tuskegee Airmen" 99th/332nd Fighter Group flew P-51 aircraft with distinctively painted "Red Tails." I've never heard them referred to as the "Red Noses" in my readings.
