I'm always curious to know where people get their nicks and usernames. So, I'm asking you to tell where you got your name.
It´s probably a genetical feature. You know, I was stopped by a Dutchman asking for directions a couple of weeks ago. He spoke English fluently and asked me if I could show him the way to the centre of something he called "Blairchken". "I´m sorry" I said, "the centre of what ?". "Blairchken" he said. Then it occured to me that he could mean the centre of Bergen, since this conversation took place in Bergen. Very close to the town centre as a matter of fact. I asked him if that was the case, he confirmed, got his directions and all ended well. I must say I was fascinated. I had no idea that it was possible to pronounce the name of the town I live in in such a manner. Bergen is of course a Dutch name ( it is an old Hansa town ), the original Norwegian name was Bjørgvin, and I know there is a town/city in the Netherlands which is called Bergen as well. But how do you Dutchmen manage to get so many ( strange ) sounds out of so few letters ?
Honestly I would know only one way to pronounce Bergen, which would sound a lot like 'beargun' in English. Nothing like Blairchken. Maybe he was trying to make it sound Norwegian? :-? How should one pronounce Bergen then?
post subject Place names! In "LEICESTER" pronounced "LESTER", "BELVOIR" is pronounced "BEEVER". "DERBY" is "DARBY" "Loughborough" is "LUFF-BRR" and not as the ww2 americans said "LOU-GER-BER-OOGER"
I can't seem to remember why I picked 'SturmTiger' for this forum. The fact that I'm Polish might explain it.
Well, Casselbury is, of course, my actual last name (and it is pronounced the way it is spelled ). Corp is short for corporal, which is what my rank was in my Civil War reenacting unit at the time I created my username for this forum. In fact, that is also my Yahoo e-mail address.
Well at least you are not part of the SCA, they gather once a year to hit each other over the head to lose IQ points.
I used my real first name so I don't get confused! Hell, that's why I continue to wear the name tag on my uniform!
I was too, but I like artillery weapons, they wouldn't let me play with my period toys. But the cultural representations of the "medicinal" alcoholic beverages was quite interesting.
