Wasn't the Milwaukee lost going to the assistance of the sub, which was in some sort of trouble -- sunk or stranded or something?

OK, had to do some digging here...

H3 was stranded on the Californian coast and the USN decided not to pay for commercial salvage. After several attempts with tugs & smaller ships, they used the cruiser Milwaukee to tow the sub off. Unfortunately the sub didnt move, effectively anchoring the cruiser, which was theb pushed aground by the current and eventually declared a total loss. H3 was eventually pushed (not towed) afloat by a civilian salvage company.

An event on 22nd June 1893 could have changed the course of WW1 at sea. Explain.

During that beautiful summer day, RN Mediterranean fleet was maneuvering off Tripoli (not the one at Libya). Admiral Tryon was showing off the audience at shores of Tripoli and ordered some turns with his ships (in two columns) without proper safety margins bethween ships. As a result was this:

How it could have changed the course of WW1 at sea? Well, certain Commander Jellicoe was onboard of the ship at that picture during that day...

Well done -- a big What If!

I thought Beatty was on the Camperdown, but I found he joined her "shortly after" the disaster

    Ok, now an obscure one:

A certain naval officer (with Finnish sounding surname) received a VC with rather strange recommendation during WW2. Who was this naval officer and what else notable was with this VC?

Would that be the skipper of HMS Glowworm (I'm afraid I had to cheat and look up the action to find his name  ), Lt Cdr Roope, whose recommendation came from the commander of the Hipper through the International Red Cross?

    Spot on!

Roope is a finnish name too, most famous Finnish Roope is Roope-setä, uncle Scrooge.

Extra point for knowing what else notable was with that VC?

As no-one answered, I'll give the answer for that extra point: Roope was first Victoria Cross receiver of World War II.

    Now, Simon, your turn.

Surely the fact that he was recommended by the enemy is the notable thing? Have any other medal winners been nominated thus?

Yes, that recommendation was the most notable thing, I was asking also what else notable was about his VC.

Apparently there was few other VC recommendations made by enemy, don't know if there is actual nominations too.
