OK, let me get this straight. We (Americans) won at Pearl Harbor? Well it's a good thing we sunk all those Japanese torpedoes with our battleships, or the Pacific War definitely would have lasted a lot longer....

I'm guessing the point is 'lost the battle, won the war'...

    just a guess though.

Well unless we get into the fiction of alternate history (my son is a huge Harry Turtledove fan), the Allies did win WWI and WWII.

Yo, do you have a problem with Tom Hanks, Ome Joop? I think he's a pretty good actor. I've only seen one of the movies he stars in, but in that movie, I think he plays his character like he was born to do it.

Don't get me wrong here...that is what that movie says...those guys who fought at Pearl are heroes but that movie is so much over the top it's to horrible to watch...that pilot guy first almost single handedly (maybe even blindfolded) wins the Battle of Brittain and then he finnishis of a complete squadron of Japs...yeah right!
If they even looked closely at the history it would have been a much better movie and much more interesting!

Before we go on I just need to confirm something. That "We Americans Won At Pearl Harbor" thing. That's totally bogus. The Americans got their butts kicked at Pearl Harbor. I like the Americans and despise the Japs, but those are the facts. The Americans got beat at Pearl Harbor, period, end of story. It should say "We Americans Lost At Pearl Harbor". Or at least "We Americans Lost At Pearl Harbor But Won At Midway" or something.

That wasn't the one where he lost "Best Actor" to the basketball, was it?

BTW -- a lot of this comes down to personal opinions based on individual tastes. Personally, I think many of the best World War II films were made at or near the time, probably British and certainly in black and white, but other people would disagree. Again, personally, I think Tom Hanks is vastly overrated as an actor, but I'm not stopping you having the opposite opinion. Out of curiosity, which film have you seen?

If you check out Cast Away, Forrest Gump or The Green Mile you may find your opinion changed - particularly the first one is very powerful, in my opinion.

Re: Pearl Harbor, I think there's been a misunderstanding, no one here seriously suggested that the Americans won that battle. People only expressed their outrage at the fact that it was made to look like an American victory in the millennium's worst war movie, Pearl Harbor.

I thought i made that clear...i was talking about the movie not the real thing (or are there people mistaking movies for real facts here?)?
Darn that must be because English isn't my first language but thanks Roel for explaining it propperly!

BTW I liked the Green Mile (Books were better) but still i don't like Tom Hanks....it's got all to do wit that stupid series Bosom Buddies :(

I actually had forgotten about the movie Pearl Harbor and was thinking you were talking about Tora, Tora, Tora. Yes, Pearl Harbor was a dreadful move deserving whatever criticism can be leveled at it. I can't understand why Disney went through all the trouble of using great computer graphics to get "Battleship Row" just right, but then they show three modern destroyers in the very next series of shots. This is what happens when someone produces/directs a movie who has little appreciation for historical accuracy. Of course adding mediocre acting and a poor story (I hate most historical fiction anyhow) didn't help either. I'm surprised the main character didn't help shoot down Yamamoto before the movie ended.

    Have you seen 'The Fall'?
I think is the movie that was missing from ww2 films as it covers a topic wich is a taboo for most filmakers.Besides the acting was very good and Hitler was presented in a very succesful way.
