    Yes, it is a machine for producing a trencch - an idea dreamed up in WW1 to allow armies to advance without having to go 'over the top'.
    Called an NLE (or Nellie).

    I though this was a pre WW2 idea. I think there was a variant for digging vehicle sized trenches.

    Why would they even use that in WW2? The trench warfare was little or none

    Because we thought that WW2 would be just like WW1.

    Sometimes we just lack imagination... ;)
