Meh, never really liked the guy, plus he is a politician, equals me not caring. At least he is not as bad as Paul Martin.

Yeah but Harpers your fellow countryman. I didn't like Paul Martin but that doesn't mean I would sit back and allow him to be killed. I would still be ticked off - hes a fellow Canadian as well.

You'll start caring about politicians if there is ever a time in which there are none left.

People just can't get their heads around the fact that there is a lot about democracy that is utterly awesome for the average man.

Thats not what I ment. I just dont value their lives as much as I do someone else. They start wars and they dont fight it themselves they have other people do it for them. I just havce trouble respecting that kind of person.

It is a common modern myth that only higher-ups ever start wars. If it were true that politicians start all the wars and let the people fight and die for them, then where does the concept of the peasant revolt come from?

Anyone and everyone starts wars whenever they think they have anything to gain from it.

Besides, it isn't as if politicians start wars on a whim and then drive thousands of their captive citizens to the slaughter like cattle. Wars are elaborately planned and prepared things, the politicians you are talking about are elected representatives of the people, and the soldiers they send to war are volunteers.

But most politicians dont evan represent the people they represent their party and only their party. They do what their party says not what the people want.

Then it is up to the people to vote for a better party.

That's always easier said then done. Take the US for example: I am willing to bet that the vast majority of eligible voters in the United States are independent minded, yet we have only two major parties; one right wing, the other left. Both Republicans and Democrats appear to be drawing as much distance away from each other as possible. The Republicans are heading for the extremity of the right wing, but at least they aren't doing it as fast as the Democrats are going for the extremities of the left. If this keeps up, it's not all that crazy to think in the future that U.S. voters will have to choose between a Hitler and a Stalin as a Republican or Democratic president, respectively.

Sadly a Culture War has begun in the US: the left in the US is becoming more and more liberal - which isn't exactly a move to the left, but more a move towards anarchy. The Right is not moving at all. In fact, it is the Right that are the most centralist - they are the only ones who are standing up for common sense here. But as the Left moves more to anarchy, the Right appears more autocratic.
For example people may say that that Guantanamo is reminiscent of a Concentration Camp - this is a lie. The Prisoners are kept in amazingly good conditions - they get food and water, and even have facilities such as a gym and Library - its just like any prison. Personally I think they are kept too well, considering what they have done to innocent people.People seem to be forgetting this. Why are we campagining for Facists hell bent on Genocide to have a swell time? I just don't get it.
I recognise that there are Far Right individuals such as Ann Coulter, but much of the Right wing (eg. Bill O'Reilly) have denouced the Far Right. The Moderate Right is not moving further Right. The Left is becoming more and more Liberal. There is evidence for this:

Hillary Clintion used to hold a position against Gay Marriage, and is now in favour of it!

The Liberal Media or Democrats showed no compasion for the two US soldiers kidnapped and then HORRIFICALLY TORTURED in Iraq (RIP). These two men both had their hearts cut out before their throats being slashed. Their bodies were then desecrated by their murderers. The Liberal Media remains silent about this, but makes no hesitation to beat their chests over the the Iraq Massacre (which the Left is responsible for - creating discontent amongst Iraqis by spinning the inescapable collateral damage - Soldiers get annoyed over civilans hulring stones and insults and then fight back - Its a repeat of the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam) and the suppossedly barbaric treatment of Terrorists in Gitmo.

The existance of the ACLU speaks for itself - an pointless organisation set up to protect paedofiles, dangerous criminals and Islamic extremists etc. - any scourge of society. WHY? fighting for these peoples human rights willl not accomplish anything - it is tougher laws to scare people into not commiting a crime that is needed. EVIL PEOPLE DESERVE TO BE TERRIFIED. However an opposite organisation or man campagning for tougher laws is frowned upon. For example Bill O'Reilly's crusade to pass Jessicas Law in all states has been attacked by Liberals everywhere eg. New Hampshire.

The list goes on and on.

The USA doesn't have a left. There's only Right and Slightly-Less-Right. The correct terms are Conservative Liberal (Republican) and Progressive Liberal (Democrat), though neither name necessarily reflects the actual impact of their policies.

El Pablo, if you are such an advocate of harsh punishment, would you say the period of the Terror during the French Revolution should be renamed the period of the Justice? After all, in that age anyone and everyone was instantly sentenced to death over the very suspicion of an offence. Talk about laws to scare people into conformity.

Should we start calling Stalin a righteous ruler with unorthodox and exemplary methods?

Why is it that in every country through every age, death penalty or not, crime still exists? Murder and rape still happen?

Wow, what great conclusive evidence! I am amazed. Because ONE person changes her mind on ONE issue, this must totally mean the ENTIRE left is becoming more liberal on ALL issues!

What is liberal media? Give me some examples, and I will counter your dogma. Typically necons refer to CNN ("Communist News Network) as a type of liberal media, but WAIT...

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/06/21/soldie ... index.html

Here they report a very compassionate scene... how exactly should a news network show compassion? They should be neutral and report news as it is.

Give us something better than this simple minded dogma... I have just shown a "liberal" media reporting on this... If you want to talk about twisted news sources, we can talk FOX news, and the loudmouth, lowbrow pundit Bill O'Reilly.

The left is responsible for the "Iraq Massacre"? I take it you are referring to Haditha, which is still an alleged massacre as of now. I cannot see how the "Left" can be responsible for the Haditha massacre. This is unacceptably naive, dogmatic thinking. I could respond in the same manner and claim that there would not even BE a massacre if it was not for the invasion, but hey, its happened.

While barbaric is a relative term, nothing peeves me more than hypocritical "moral superiority" neocons supporting what is cleary defined as torture under the United Nations Convention Against Torture.

There will always be a culture war.

If they did something to civilains why havent they been charged with anything? I thought in America you are iunnocent until proven guilty?

Genocide, America destrtoyed dozens of cultures and many of the languages pretty much ceased to exhist so did most of the populations so Americans really shouldnt be talking anything about Genocide they are just as bad as alll the other genocidal fascists.

"Democracy is the worst for of government..." Winston Churchil.

I beg to differ. For the last few days, I have seen this incident portrayed on all media sources. In my opinion, they are not forgetting what happened to these two soldiers, rather they are giving it too much significance. Is this what these two men wanted when they died; the brutal and sadistic ways in which they were killed slathered all over the media? You are wrong, El Pablo. The media, whether it be right or left in orientation, craves this kind of stuff, for the same reason I see nothing but murder, rape, and arson on my local news channels: ratings and a lack of worldly perspective.

Another thing, what is this Liberal Media I hear about so often?
News Corporation, one of the world's largest media conglomerates, is owned by Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch is well-known for his support of Bush and Reagan. Moving on to smaller right-winged fish, the US has Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reily, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, there are really too many to mention all of them here.

If there is anything note-worthy about the news, at least here in America, it is that it's clumsy, many times ignorant, and more often than that irrelevant (like who won American Idol or what percentage of Americans believe in ghosts (yes, I've seen that on TV quite recently)). Whatever political orientation the media may lean towards, it is nevertheless a horrible source of information.

    Roel wrote:
There is a rather large seperation between the two parties, and the issues they promote are more often than not also different. Of course there is some grey area, like how the government involves itself in society (the Republicans are strictly against big government, but they are just as guilty of it as the Democrats, although Republican big government goes more along the lines of secretly peering into the private lives of its citizens than offering social assistance or trust-busting). There is a left in America. It may not appear as such because we have a rightist president, but the US has smart people. ;)

I agree with zukov. If you want to know whats going on in Iraq a soldier who is there. You can go to Hawaii meet some they leaving July 4, yup America isnt very secret about sending reinforcements or replacements, but Russia is.
