so it is about the region after all, not the country. you could have mentioned that before i got all annoyed and ready to crusade for FYROM's independence...

now, is your problem that FYROM is using the name "Macedonia", or that the entire region doesn't belong to Greece?

Hmmm, nope still don't see the reason...
Macedonians are not Greeks, thats a good enough reason to separate the two countries... Its not like this is a unique event either, history has shown such a split to be a common (and often good) thing...

Since you asked what I'd think if it was my country, I honestly wouldn't care so long as my people had their own nation... Which IS going to be the case, its not like Greece is being annexed (like Czechoslovakia was in 1939), and its not like Greeks are being expelled from Macedonia (like the Germans were from Czechoslovakia in 1945)... The government is only losing a small and *relatively unproductive* portion to the north... This is just like what happened to Yugoslavia, then Serbia-Montenegro, then the quite separate 'Republic of Serbia' and 'Republic of Montenegro'... Funny how the separations were synonomous with stabilised peace in the region...

If you don't like it when separate ethnicities split into different nations, I suppose we should just give Greece back to the glorious Ottoman Empire...

The only interests I see Greece having in relation to Macedonia are pride-related...

Macedonia has always been inhabited by a Greek sept called Macedonians by later historians.
Around 565-610 AD. Slavs were already located north of Danube river consulting raids to the southern lands, Byzantium. In the beginnings of the 7th century they started to form permanent installations within the lands of the Byzantine Empire called Sklavinies in Greek. During these raids, most of the Greek populace of the area was nearly exterminated, kidnapped or took flight, away of Macedon. By the middle 7th century to 9th century Slavs were living within the Empire's lands by it's tolerance, due to internal turbulence, (edited when to) while these areas, the sklavinies, were evolved to the first slavik states.The Greeks,however, became again dominant in most of Macedonia during the following decades.
Since then, these states have evolved to modern countries of the northern Balkan.

That is the reason why Greeks don't agree to tha name Macedonia of the F.Y.R.O.M.. Simply beacause the inhabitant populace is not indigenous, therefore not Macedonians.
