sinessa , we in the usa and in russia have greatly reduced our stockpiles of icbms ...i think they should be reduced even more , but as to giveing them up altogether ...well ..dont hold your breath , americas nukes were the only thing that kept somen 36 warsaw pact divisions from blasting through nato and all the way into blighty way back in the mid 50s..with out the big stick ,uncle joe would have come through the fauldi gap like shyt through a goose ,make no mistake...

    .

this whole nuke thing is a triumph of stupidity over budgetary reason
    - the US , russia , china , maybe one day europe, can mobilise hundreds of divisions , thousand of modern planes and tanks ,
what is the point of promoting a weapon system wich make the smallest piss ant nation your equal .
if the super power had any brains they would procaim , and enforce the total removal of those weapons ,
it would leave the world powers safe from second ranked countries
if you are the biggest brawler in the pub , enforcing a "no guns" rule is totally in your favor .

But that assumes that the other countries will actually give up their nukes. Can you see Pakistan (for example) freely giving up their nukes because the USA said pretty please?

You could end up in the laughable situation where South Africa becomes the world superpower because they are the only nuclear-capable nation. :D

Interesting to bring up South Africa. It is still the only nation that did abolish it's nuclear arsenal and dissassemble it's nuclear weapons stockpiles.

Ukraine, Kazakhastan and a few other Central Asian states voluntarily (Ukraine somewhat reluctantly) disarmed adding to the global ill-will towards nuclear weapons.

As for Pakistan and India, or India and China, neither party would be anxious to shed a single nuke for an idealist nuclear-free future, unless, perhaps, the US was to set the way. If the United States was to significantly reduce its nuclear arsenal- and it could without undermining its own or its allies security- a benchmark would be set for other nations. But such a show of good faith is still unlikely to motivate India and Pakistan, or China for that matter, to abandon their nuclear programs and delete their arsenals (there's way too much history for these nations to disarm on their own recognizance. I laugh even thinking about a possible disarmament in this region.

As has been already mention, peace through MAD is a poor option- even in comparision to the improbability of complete, global disarmament. If more nations join the nuclear band-wagon- and what, there's nine nations so far?- it will become harder to locate the originator of an aggressive nuclear bomb and so will it become more difficult to militarily engage those who perpetrated the act (or who we think[i/] perpetrated the act). If a country really wants to legitimately field nuclear weapons, it should first convert to democracy and then who cares? Does America fret over Britain's or France's nuclear weapons?

On the original topic, I do hope China's tests were a response to Bush's push for space-based weapons, rather than an attempt to overcome American military power (though where does one really draw the line?). This technology is twenty years old however, and although the US military (and several others) has found great advantage in satellite technology, I don't believe it, or any other nation, has a complete relience on this technology. Laser bombs work without satellites, but then they will require that human element which the American military so increasingly attempts to reduce.

considering the chinese strategic nuclear arsenal , one is struck by its small size , definitly done on the cheap
five hundred warhead or so ,
most of the very impressive military spending has been on conventionnal , rocketry and ( gasp ) navy assets .
obviously they would wholeheartedly aggree to a no nuke policy ,
india is about four times the size of pakistan , a strategic understanding already is in place between the triad russia ,china, india .
giving india a veto and permanent seat on the security council while reconising its strategic interests in the indian ocean should see the outline of a deal .
pakistan is a starveling joke ,who would crumble after a solid embargoe,
a failed state surviving on drug dealing and the handout of china and the U.S.
whose whole political life is a succession of military coups led by fanatics like musharaf , the godfather of the taliban !
to even for one second consider him as an allied and a democrat is the glaring proof that the afghanistan imbroglio is doomed to failure ,
the life of good men , wasted by the sheer stupidity of political nonentities.

way back in the clinton whitehouse days ,china was not haveing much luck with their satilite and missle guidence systems ...bill and hillery in their infinate wisdon sent a bunch of us rocket science guys over their to help them get their satilite systems all squared away...it seemed to me at that time the height of poor judgement to give maos progeny a leg up in the space race. ( kinda like when the uk labor party gave stalin a jet engine so he could power up his mig 15 and later kill anglo and american air crews in korea in 51 ) ...............it seems now these chinese chickens are coming home to roost.....

Of course, if you assume that all other countries are your enemy, and that China is out to get you. It would be wise for a modern nation not to think that way because there isn't a country on earth right now that would prosper if it decided to become autarkic. In fact, has any country ever benefited from assuming - on no grounds whatsoever - that everyone was hostile to them by default?

You need trade, and therefore you need peaceful international contacts. It is wise to make sure that you have friends in the world, political and economic.

Down under , we got china pretty close , no drama , they are OK as long as
one's give them a bit of space and respect .
Their plan to take over the world is to manufacture ALL the clothing of ALL the countries , in case of war , their enemies would have to fight naked
    :D

Seriously their conventional forces are getting smaller and better , watch the growth of their rocket forces and navy ,
within five years the US navy will have to be very circunspect around the china sea

roel ...i dont assume all other countrys are out to get us ,just the giant scarie sharp clawed ones who actually have been getting us...only the ones that have been actively or inactively killing us or western servicemen and supporting maoist ,khmer, shineing path kinda terrorists in recent decades ...mao was the greatest ,coldest and most ruthless of mass murderers and his deputys are still in charge today, albiet in a more pc manner.....the chinese through their rabid straining pit bull pyongyang still keep all of asia (and us) on the edge of our seats... the chinese until very recently have had their hands in lots of nastiness in asia ,africa and south america ...if you think the chinese are our good freinds just because they are trying to suck every last dollar, pound and franc out of western economys through piracy and sleazball trade practices you better dig out your abacus and re figure ..while its true the pla has not actively shot holes through the shirts of us ,uk and dutch soldiers for some 60 years ,try to remember the chinese have a very long history and tend to look at things long term...60 years aint nothing to the chinese... "SIT ! pyongyang !!...see.. he good doggie ..he no bite you...."

The economic destruction of the west by china is funded , pushed and applauded by wall mart , merchand banks and every pension funds from new york to stockolm , making money out of the blood and tears of chinese workers
As to the benevolence of the people republic of china , that's something I do not judge,
but the countries wich traditionnaly payed tribute to the middle kingdom , are china's concern and they will take action against any power who meddle to close without talking to them first .
the western countries see themselves ( rightly I believe ) as the best thing to come to asia , asian have much more mixed feelings about it .

It's not too dificult to see that large powerful countries have a " personnal space "
wich they do not like to see crowded by others

P.S. VP cheyney is in town to beg a few dozen more soldiers for irak and to warn against the chinese menace ,
last year it was the riga speech where he warned against the russian menace ,
The man is really broad spectrum !! :D

Are you seriously comparing modern China to Maoist China? Are you seriously calling North Korea, which cannot lob its new-fangled nuclear arsenal even halfway across the ponds that surround them, a threat to the Western world?

Technically Mao didn't hold a candle to Stalin in ruthlessness, he was more of a bumbling idiot than a murdering statesman, but it's not my intention to justify any of the millions of deaths he caused. However, modern China has very little to do with him and his legacy; it is communist only in name. The whole country is westernizing, modernizing and heavily dependent on Western markets and the import of resources from all over the world. These are not Russian autarks and they're hardly going to expand across the Pacific any time soon, so I seriously don't get why you're trying to scare us into thinking they're the New Evil. Sure, they may be an agressive new power convinced of their own might and determined to claim their place in the world - that should be nothing new. Not all new powers start world wars, though.

Oh, by the way, both French and Belgian francs have been out of use for six years.

Woody, you somehow give me the very impression that anything made in China is bad.
However,it is precisely the attitudes and mindsets of people like yourself,no offence intended, that really caused the drift between the East and the West.
To Asians, the West that seemingly colonised us and brought some benefit to us were still,by far and large,NOT the best thing that happened to us.

Isn't it telling that in recent years, with the exception of North Korea, there really isn't any Asian politician going ard the world warning against the Western menace(apaart from the rogue nations.)?

There really hasn't been any semblance of resistance against the West by the secular nations of Asia but here i am hearing mostly Americans talk about how China is the menace of the world.Even TIME magazine has a more balanced view of China.

As a sidenote, sometimes i wish i could go back in time and help the Qing Emperor re-organise his armies and weaponry and give the British or the Coalition of the 8 nations a surprise. But then again, with proper guidance and management,Chinese fleets would perhaps forcibly open the ports of Southhampton,Cherbourg and all that.
Ah but well,i can't do that can i?

Hardly. The Chinese people have prospered tremendously from trade with the US and the West whether through Wal-Mart products or through every other consumer item that floods the markets in the west. Chinese factories don't pay western wages nor adopt western working conditions but the benefits that the Chinese workers have received have been considerable compared to the bad old days of communist lunacy.
You don't hear much about Cultural Revolutions or counterrevolutionaries out of China these days do you?

grieg . i'm O.K. with the consumer society coming to china , we see plane loads of the critters coming to sydney on tourism trip ,
It's both funny and touching to see old women from bushnuts swetchuan discovering koalas ,
a mainlander told me that the current crop of leaders is reasonably corrupt ,dumb and repressive , certainly life is hard but is getting so much better ,for so long , for so many , the people give the red mandarins full credit for it .

my point was that the west , to sqeeze any extra gram of profit , is destroying the industrial and manufacturing fabric of its society ,
companies like wall-mart act as oulet for cheap goods at unbeatable prices
recently , it was cheaper for me to buy a chain-saw that to rent one
the west is putting short term profits above long term interests
china can hardly be blamed for taking advantage of it

nobody is innocent , nobody is guilty

not true kaiser, i love mu shu pork and pot stickers...im not afraid of hong kong or taiwon or singapore . i confess i buy and use a million different products that come from the prc , like everyone else......and i applaud the growing middle class and affluence in the prc.the country has moved mostly away from the red books terror days of the great helmsman -executioner but still, his cronies run the place with an iron grip...iirc , the people did try to embrace the statue of liberty and freeom of speach ..but i think the peoples liberation tank corps ran over the peoples liberation demonstators with their tank treads ..it seems the peoples liberation army is quite ready to liberate the souls from the mortal bodies of the chinese population at the whim of their masters who still worship at shrine of the worlds alltime greatest reaper of souls himself ...mouse eat dung..and since the pla is the worlds biggest military force and well trained and equiped ...yes , i am a little bit wary of them ....DUH....and their menacing lunatic pit bull "pyongyang"....i mean ,any person who knows anything about world events of the last 60 years or so would have to be a simpleton not to keep a weather eye on the red leviathon ....kaiser , you and roel are young and might think of the millions of dead chinese of the cultural revolution as an abstraction , i was alive when they were alive so to me they seem like real people (which of course ,they were ) we in the west felt pity for the trapped innocents but were releived at least that the slaughter was contained "in house" the fact that mao is now at last confined in hell , does not mean that his great coiled beast could not wake up tomorrow and snarf up a zillion more chinese , or worse yet ,come outside of its fence and run amok where the west would be forced to be like an animal control officer trying to subdue godzilla with a butterfly net..... .
    I. like you , am mostly optimistic that wealth , corruption and greed once again rule the hearts of the leaders of china..... but , i can assure you that it would be most imprudent to assume that the beast of tianimen square cannot or will not ever go berserk again just because it hasent lately....10 years seems like a long time to a twenty year old , it aint nothing ....really..
