most ordinary people are decent and helpfull the world over ...ime ..most germans alive in 1940 were good steadfast people , im sure most north koreans are upstanding ,earnest and industrious .....the problem of course is , its not the ordinary people who are in charge of the really scairie weapons (including us the west , of course ) but at least we can fire our leaders if need be...........lord knows it was dicey enough when only the usa and soviets held all the big wmd cards...nukes in the hands of india and pakistan is worriesome enough....wringing our hands and asking for tougher sanctions on iran is a foolish ,spineless and neville chaimberlinesh , old womanish type of action ...after this iraq fiasco , its no doubt what we are gonna do though ...you just watch...

Iraq fiasco is not over yet, not by a long shot. And just to remind you where do you think Iraqi Shia and Kurds and Afganistani N. aliance loyalties lay. Do you think that to the US? No way. In Iraq US lost all face way back in 1991. Remember when Bush senior let Sadaam kill them off after he promised that he would support their revolt (which was started after he promised help). Iran was the only country backing anti Taliban forces since Soviet pullout in late 1980's. Do you think they owe anything to the US?
And with waht army do you propose US will do that? US army is seriously overextended and worn out. With what money will US finance such enterprise?

    Woody get serious. ;)

When did President H.W. Bush promise that he would help the Iraqi revolt?
Do you have a source for that promise of help? I recall him calling on the Iraqi people to rise up against Saddam. I do not recall him promising help.
It seems to me to be good advice to call on a people to rise up against a despotic and brutal dictator but where did he promise that the US would intervene in their behalf?
Your opinion that the US military is worn out isn't supported by the facts. Stretched thin? Yes.
    Worn out?
Not hardly. That is mere wishful thininking on your part.

BTW The lack of material support for the Shiite uprising in 1991 was the result of scrupulously abiding by the UN mandate. There was no UN mandate for the coalition forces to enter Iraq and overthrow Saddam was there? You criticize G.W. Bush for exceeding his authority because he DID the very thing that you criticize his father for NOT doing.
We call that talking out of both sides of your mouth, or hypocricy, whichever you prefer. ;)

Grieg i'm merly stating the fact that US does not have support or alliagence of Shiites in the south of Iraq (mostly becouse of 1991 and prewious support US gave to Saddam in the 1980's). You may spinn it anyway you like but it is still the fact.

    Forget spin. You stated
No, I don't remember that. Why don't you refresh our memory (and provide a quote from President Bush). He urged the Iaqis to rise up but AFAIK he didn't promise them help. You say he did. Just support your statement.

What is the wiki article supposed to prove?
BTW It isn't disputed that the Iraqis were encouraged to rise up and overthrow Saddam. What is disputed is the alleged promise of help from the US by President Bush.

I believe the operative word here is "encourage' not "support."
Pappa Bush ENCOURAGED the Shiia and Kurds to overthrow Saddam... their Sunni dictator.
I believe there was a percentage of the American public that was disappointed we didn't continue on to Bagdad and depose the despot when we were so close in '91. I suspect that world politics played an important role in that decision. I can't help but wonder how many lives would utimately been saved had we pressed-on and 'offed the bugger' in the course of the Gulf War.
Perhaps intelligence suggested that we could save many military American/Coalition lives if we allowed the Iraqi people to topple the tyrant themselves. In any case, the Kurds were willing but Saddam went after them every chance he got. I expect the same was true of Shiia as well.
Keep in mind the '91 coalition was a fragile one... and we were quite sensitive to Arab nations' input in pursuing the war. I expect they were in agreement concerning the ouster of Iraq from Kuwait, but they did not want to see 'infidels' marching on Bagdad itself.
It would have been preferable had the script played-out and a popular uprising overthrew the government... but it did not. Saddam was just too well entrenched, and I suspect the Iraqis were too frightened of murderous retaliation to act.

    .
As anything in the middle east , things are never quite simple ,

    some possible options

1- smuggling is going on , the iraki territorial waters are an incredibly narrow strip of sea , the best shipping channel is exacly on the border line
smart arse smuggler duck and weave in and out of iraki control , in 20 seconds a cargo ship can be in iran or irak , the revolutionary guards are the one running the show , bakshiish can be assumed

2- the allied forces have arrested some " iranians diplomats " recently
Georges W. made a great pronouncement of authorising U.S. forces to kill irannians trespassers , payback , hostages , demonstration of force ????

3- the vote at the united nation really got up the nose of the leadership and they are showing that they can put pressure too ,
the second aircraft carrier is now in the gulf , bring it on , bring it on , sort of thing
welcome to the worst kind of playing chiken

4- my favorite ...... a local stuff up by a local commander , too excited for his own good ,
leaving everybody in the manure trying to look tough but conciliatory at the same time .
if things are good the fourteen servicemen plus one servicewoman will be home for xmass , the british government suggesting that maybe there was some doubt about some electronic gismo- thinggy ,a joint commitee will be set up all to save face

you can make up your own , it would probably make as much sense

    Update:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6506361.stm

I especially like the facts in the little box marked
    "UK VERSION OF EVENTS"

btw - why do countries like Iraq or Iran insist on showing TV footage of captured servicemen/women publically recanting their actions and praising their captors? ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6503657.stm ) Do they honestly think anybody anywhere believes it? Is it an attempt to gain some kind of moral high-ground? Or is it purely propaganda for the home team?

First, let me say I hope these British troopers are returned quickly, and safely.
I think it simply serves to underscore the fact that rational-thinkers are scratching their heads as to percieved Iranian intentions.
It seems the GPS coordinates are indisputable. Confessions by those being held captive mean nothing. I think Iran is playing a dangerous game with Tony Blair and Britain. There are now 2 USN carrier battle-groups off the Iranian coast undertaking "exercises."
I heard theres even a French carrier-group in the vicinity. If Iran decides to put these hostages on trial... well, I'll be following Tony Blairs oratory in the House of Commons.
    Go GET 'em Tony!

It could happen and it wouldn't surprise me Iran are very protective of their waters, mainly cause its a main Drug route.

On other cases, War is very close i hope Iran doesn't push it.

I think that P.M. Blair has already made the call to organize a spec. ops. team to extract those soldiers. Heck, they could be on their way to the Persian Gulf right now.

sooner or later the west is going to have to show the jihadists the super bright shineing light of reason ...boots on the ground is not ever going to work unless it is the boots of ghengis ,attila or tamurlink..the words of the prophet demand that good devout muslims make war on the kafirs and infidels until all the world is at peace under the one true god ...
were it not for the efforts of greeks ,balkans ,spaniards ,cossacks ,hungarians and poles ...we westerners would all have our heads wrapped in towels and be muttering and noddind the verses 5 times a day like robots ..as it is the jihad steams on in darfur ,sudan , israel , iraq ,timor ,chechneya.the phillipenes et al.. now as it always has ..and ever will much of western europe will be un
der muslim religious law within a few generations simply by virtue of birthrate ....the modern eu habit of appeasment and pc ethnic asskissing is naive and ultimately it will be cultural suicide... this holy war is not going to go away by wishful thinking , ever
....i am now convinced that opposeing the russians in afganistan and the serbs in bosnia was a mistake ...this war has been going on for 1400 years and its not going to stop unless we make it stop now ,while we still can ...or... we can all submit and convert to islam , the word moderate muslim is an oxymoron ...there is no such thing for a proper muslim as following part of the koran and ignoreing the other parts ....the punisment for leaving the muslim faith is death....ever notice how few christian missionarys there are in muslim countrys? islam was ...and still is today , spread by the sword ...the only way it has ever been contained is with a bigger and sharper sword...if jihadists are willing to strap on a bomb merely to kill 6 infidels at a bus stop. whats to stop them from carrieing a suitcase off the flway at heathrow ,atlanta or moscow to slay a million infidels at once ?...nothing , except they dont yet have the proper type of suitcase...they will though , soon enough , as it is almost certainly gods will...
