They really need heavy tanks to fight the taliban? i would think Air craft would be more useful

What is it for? Is it just camo, or something more?

Armour is useful for direct infantry support and aircraft aren't always ideal, poor weather or poor visability can really limit their effectiveness and recognition is a lot more difficult from 10,000 ft.

Tanks are essentially a relatively invulnerable big gun.

the netting is also to help keeping the temperature lower in the tank

They are almost the same size:

    Leopard 2A5 - 62,4 tons

    M1 Abrams - 57,2 tons

These are basic numbers and does not take notice of any extra armour or equipment.

You are way off on the Abrams. The M1A1 is about 68 tons and the M1A2 about 69-70 tons.

EDIT- it appears that you may have mixed tons and tonnes. Most sources show the Leopard 2A6 as 62.3 tonnes (about 137,060 lbs) and the Abrams M1A2 as 68.7 tons (about 137,400 lbs). They weigh about the same. Of course there is about 10,000 more pounds of the Leo's weight in the engine when compared to the Abrams which can then be put into DU armor.

Leopards engine/gear/shaft pack weighs about 6 t (13,227 lbs i think) how much weighs the powerpack of the Abrams?
BTW Nice to see different capacities come together :D

    1 ton, gross or long6 = 2,240 pounds = 1.12 net tons = 1.016 metric tons

    1 ton, metric = 2,204.623 pounds = 0.984 gross ton = 1.102 net tons

    1 ton, net or short = 2,000 pounds = 0.893 gross ton = 0.907 metric ton

    I found the engine weight
    the AGT-1500 weighs 1.134kg ( 1.1 t)
    the MB 873 weighs 2.590kg (2.6 t)

BTW i checked the weight of both tanks by their producers, kraus-maffei wegmann states the A6 weighs 59,7 t and General Dynamics states the M1A2 weighs 69.54 Tons (63 t).

Those nettings on the Leopard are made of something fire resistant or?
Why not paint them (altough i guess this is much cheaper and easier to change back)?
