Yes, Finland just joined to that privileged group of countries where fatal schoolshootings happen.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7082795.stm

According to local (conflicting) media reports, there are 3-8 killed and several injured. Apparently there was only one shooter although some reports talk about up to 3 shooters. Also its not confirmed yet if shooter is captured or killed.
Shooters identity is already known, he seemed to be some kind of militant wacko.

    Sad.

Now, according to latest news, 9 killed. School headmistress, nurse, 6 students and shooter. Shooter shot himself in the head and died at the hospital last evening. All other injured are recovering.

Apparently this shooting was premeditated, shooter uploaded some videos to youtube where he told about this shooting. Also he gave some hints about this in some chat forums etc. He got his gun license three weeks ago.

We are having flag at half-mast here in Finland today.

Over here there has begun some discussion wether it could have been prevented since he announced it on youtube.
To me the answer is simply "no".
Someone claiming to kill on youtube is the equivalant of someone shouting the world is about to end on a keg in the park.
Regardless how serious it is, it would be madness to heed them all.

There needs to be tighter security at schools and stricter laws about guns! Why doesn't the government just put up a law saying only police, the military, and security guards can have guns?

Yes, indeed. May God take them into His Kingdom and bless and comfort their families.

The media are saying the shooter was picked on; this seems to be a common thread with these school shooters. But you know what? I was picked on when I was in school, and I never took a gun to school and started killing people. I have no sympathy whatsoever for the shooters, just for the victims, their families, and the families of the shooters, since they have managed to drag their name through the muck. And any ravings on YouTube or any other source should be investigated by the authorities; there aren't as many of these disturbed individuals as people seem to think.

To be honest what difference would that make? He would have just brought a knife in, or drove a car into it or try to set it on fire.
People like this put a bad name to people like myself
I am a 16 year old target shooter, and also a student.
Something like this and shoooters instantly get labled as dangerous, though in my 3 or 4 years of shooting I've never had an accident, nor have I ever threatened to shoot anyone.

It really depends on the degree of bullying and/or the person. Some people are wired differently and/or have shorter fuses. I think the schools are partly to blame in many cases. They simply do little or nothing about bullying and we have to have student self harm and school shootings before we start getting tough on bullies

I too have been picked on.
But apart from that I've also been tormented, abused, outcast, degraded and whatnot (all by kids my age, most often the same group).
At the time this happened I was mentally highly unstable to say the least.
Would I have had a gun and an opportunity to kill my tormentors I would have done so without feeling regret even now.
I guess my point is that kids can be very cruel and what seems like "simple bullying" can be far worse then it looks.

Having said that I do feel for the families of all those involved.

I fail to see the motives for bullying. It's cruel, it's mean, and it can lead to people dying. There needs to be a day when bullying is eradicated.

It also comes as some form of human nature, If you are "different" then you to them are a socia outcast and a threat or a target.

How do people think of such meager excuses for tormenting others?

Christians would say that it was the devil at work, aided by flawed human nature.

I really don't want to turn this into a gundebate, but I do want to stress that this statement does not apply to all countries.

and bullying, I don't think it will ever be over as long as there are different people, who can feel the difference and perhaps jealousy. I think jealousy is one of the main causes. Don't know that can be done about it though.
and there's also social pressure, and I certainly agree with corp that this may never be an excuse.
