    Sorry for the lapse.

A brief explanation of how skills points work.

It's fairly simple really, your characters will have a set of skills depending on their backgrounds and a number of skill points to customise these with.

There's no definitive skills list, broadly if you think something warrants your character having a "skill" in it (Whether it be something potentially usefull like demolitions, or something probably useless like dress making), it's up to you.

To purchase a skill from scratch works like this:

    Skill level Points
    1 1
    2 3
    3 6
    4 10
    5 15

Basically whatever the value for the previous level plus the number for the new, i.e. skill level 6 would cost 15+6=21.

Level 1 equals a fairly basic level of knowledge, level 10 equals expert although there's no upper limit.

The exception to this is firearms skills, you may either choose general Firearms which cover all weapons equally or you can specialise in Pistol, Assault (Covering SMGs, Battle and Assault Rifles), Rifle (Bolt action), Shotgun, Support (Covering LMGs, LSWs, HMGs), Heavy (Grenade launcher, LAW, RPG, etc). Specialising costs 1/2 the points of the general Firearms skill (Rounded up to the nearest full point), but it is only useful for weapons in that class. You may still use other weapons but at a skill level of 1. You may choose to "specialise" in multiple types, as many as you want, but you have to purchase the skills in each seperately.

    Your base skills are:

    Blaster: Michael "Rhino" Bane.

    Observation 2
    Pistol 3
    Assault 3
    Support 2
    Heavy 2
    Small boat handling 2
    Melee combat 3
    Brawling 2
    Stealth 2

    Coolness under fire 4

    Skill points 20

    Siberian: Turon Blank

    Observation 2
    Pistol 3
    Assault 3
    Support 2
    Heavy 2
    Small boat handling 2
    Melee combat 3
    Brawling 2
    Stealth 2
    Coolness under fire 3

    Skill Points 8

    Blaster Johnathan Skyhawk Hood

    Observation 3
    Pistol 3
    Assault 4
    Support 3
    Heavy 3
    Small boat handling 3
    Melee combat 3
    Brawling 3
    Parachute 3

    Skill Points 26

Skills and skill points are determined on your character's background and age to a degree, as I've said elsewhere you have a number of points to spend on improving your skills or adding new ones. I'd recommend adding some skills like Negotiation or something similar so that you characters have a chance of talking their way out of situations rather than having to shoot their way out.

Roel, Stix, I'm guessing since you guys have been quiet that you're happy for me to roll up you characters for you. I'm hoping to post the mission briefing tommorrow evening.

So after modifications I get this?

    Observation 2
    Pistol 3
    Assault 3
    Support 2
    Heavy 2
    Small boat handling 2
    Melee combat 3
    Brawling 2
    Stealth 3
    Coolness under fire 3
    Negotiation: 1

    Skill Points 1

(Damn you didn't give me much to play with.....makes it more interesting  )

Whilst I remember a quick overview of how shooting works, you have two choices in this game, you can either take aimed shots or you can Area Fire. Aimed shots is hopefully fairly self explanatory, your character is firing individual shots or short bursts at a target trying to hit it.

Area fire represents either spray-and-pray at short range with something like an Assault Rifle or SMG, or supporting fire at long range with a machinegun or light support weapon.

The object of Area Fire isn't so much to hit anything but to put as many bullets into a certain area as possible. Area fire can be very useful at short range or if you have a lot of ammunition and a belt fed MG at longer ranges since it may panic your opponents or force them to keep their heads down and stop them returning fire. There's no limit to the types of firearms you can area fire with, your character may area fire with a revolver if they wish (Think of it as just pointing in the general direction and pulling the trigger as quickly as possible).

The disadvantages of this are you need to put a lot of fire down in order to score a few hits relative to aimed fire and obviously you'll waste a lot of ammunition.

Sorry Siberian, your character was fairly young and pretty dumb, she hasn't picked up a lot along the way! ;)

One more quick point on skills, just because your character doesn't have a skill in an area doesn't mean that they can't attempt things, just that they'll be operating at a disadvantage compared to if they had training or experience in that field.

I'm assuming I can purchase points for my characters now with the skill points I have.

That's the idea, it allows you to customise your character's skill list so that they're not all carbon copies of each other.

I don't get how you spend points to upgrade your character.

If to purchase a new skill in an area like negotiation, or say swimming, or driving, or whatever else (If you want your character to be able to do something feel free to come up with the skill for it withing reason) you have to spend skill points.

To get the skill at level 1 costs 1 point
    level 2 costs 3 points
    level 3 costs 6 points
    level 4 costs 10 points
    level 5 costs 15 points

To upgrade an existing skill costs a number of points equal to the next level on an incremental basis, so to upgrade from level 2 to level 3 costs 3 points (3 points being the same as the new level)

To upgrade from level 2 to level 4 would cost 7 points (3 points to get to level 3 plus 4 points to get to level 4).

New skills and upgrading cost half rounded up to the nearest whole number for Firearms specialisations such as Pistol, Assault, Shotgun, etc.

If you'd like any help or want anything in particular explaining a different way you can PM me if you'd prefer.

Oh geez, Stix, and Roel thought I was going overboard. That's gonna' be a lot of fun going up against a character like yours.

Simon, I still don't fully understand how to get points. I comprehend the upgrading from level 2-3 part, but not the level 2-4 part. Where did the 4 points to level 4 part come from?

Think of it as a multi-step process, you pay 3 points to upgrade to level 3 first, then you pay 4 points to upgrade from level 3 to level 4, you can still upgrade your skills as far as you have points to do so, but you have to pay the incremental points for each level.

The number of points required for each level is equal to the numbers of the levels required to get to that point, that's a bit of a confusing way of putting it, but what it essentially means is this. To get to level 4 for example your character will have passed through level 1, 2, 3 and 4 in a skill. So the points cost is equal to those levels added together, (So 1+2+3+4 = 10).

If you already have a skill at a lower level and are upgrading it then you only add together the levels you're upgrading through. so if you're already at level 2 and want to get to level 4 you're just passing your character through level 3 and 4, so that would cost 7 points, you don't need to pay for level 1 and 2 since your character's background and training have already given them that level of expertise.

Blaster, who said you need to go AGAINST my character?
Wouldn't you love having superman on your side? :kill:

Anywho, if Simon doesn't punish me by giving me awful skills we could always decide to simply give me a -1 or more penalty on all stats.

You rolled them fairly (I assume), so I see no reason to punish you, your character's very bright and calm but in every other respect a decent mixture of slightly above and slightly below average.

Stix is right, you'll be working together as a team not against each other.

    Stix your character's skills are:

    Streetwise 3
    Brawling 2
    Melee combat 2
    Observation 2
    Urban survival 3
    Negotiation 2
    Social 2

You have 66 skill points to allocate to upgrading or purchasing new skills.

WOOOAH!!!!!!! 66 points? That's not fair! Then again, maybe it is.

Simon, please correct me if I screwed up while upgrading:

    Michael Bane:

    Observation: 2
    Pistol: 3
    Assault: 4
    Support: 3
    Heavy: 5
    Small boat handling: 2
    Melee combat: 4
    Brawling: 3
    Stealth: 2

    Skill points: 0

Can you get skill points back?

You can accumulate extra skill points as your character develops, you can store up any left over skill points for future if you want. I'll double check your list in the morning (It's just gone midnight here) but nothing seems hugely amiss.

Don't forget that Stix's character background has given him a pretty poor starting skill package, he has no firearms skills for a start and will have purchase these from scratch. There is a method to allocating Skill Points, don't worry I don't just pick numbers out of the air ;) .

My mistake, it should have been 33 points, not 66, I thought it seemed high but didn't spot the mistake I'd made until this morning

Apologies again for the delay getting things started, now the characters are almost done (Except for Roel, but we can start without him :D I can always introduce him at a later date if he likes), I'll hopefully get something posted up over the next couple of days. Reality has been taking up a lot of time recently.

The opening turn is now up, I wont post a deadline for these at the moment since I want this to work comfortably for those involved so for the first few turns at least we'll just see how regularly responses can be submitted and how regularly I can manage to post turns on the board.

Stix, you've got up until you post your first actions to decide how to distribute your skill points. No reason why you can't play your skill package as-is if you want to.

Roel, let me know if you want your character's stats rolling and your skill points determined, or if you've done so yourself, or if you're dropping out.

    Blaster, your base skills were:

    Observation 2 (+0)
    Pistol 3 (+0)
    Assault 3 (-4)
    Support 2
    Heavy 2
    Small boat handling 2
    Melee combat 3
    Brawling 2
    Stealth 2

    Your modified skills are:

    Observation: 2 (+0)
    Pistol: 3 (+0)
    Assault: 4 (+4)
    Support: 3 (+3)
    Heavy: 5 (+3, +4, +5 = +12)
    Small boat handling: 2
    Melee combat: 4 (+4)
    Brawling: 3 (+3)
    Stealth: 2

    So a total of (+4, +3, +12, +4, +3 points = 26)

I'm guessing from this that you've accidently given Bane your other character's skill points (Bane should have 20 Skill points)? For Bane drop Heavy down to 4 and that'll only be over by 1 (Not a biggy so I'm willing to let that go)

Siberian, you can have an extra point as a freebie too if you want to make use of it.

As we seem pretty short of players at the moment, Blaster may include both his characters if he wants and Siberian Black, you may include a second character if you wish.
