There are many places like these all over the more rural parts of the US. The War Department was able to get the land really cheap, do whatever it was they wanted to and, when the war was over, either sell it off or turn the land over to the local governments who would eventually do something with it. Along the way records get lost and folks forget what was there.

Finding live ordnance is not very common nor is finding vehicles but it does occassionally happen. More common is finding where these small bases were used as dumps before they were finally closed and the new owners were never told. Now some of them have the problem of hazardous wastes leaching out.

There is a paddock near where we live, and nobody goes there because of all the live hand grenades that are continuously being found there.

My guess is that things may not be all that promising regarding the tank, if it was on a bombing range it was quite probably a target of some kind, it probably wouldn't have been in great shape when it was taken there in the first place but after it had been shot, bombed and rocketted for a while then shoved into a pit and buried for 60 years it's probably in a very poor state.

Then again, I could be totally wrong and this could be a real hidden gem and burying it may have somehow helped preserve it. I wouldn't set your hopes too high though.

Has anyone figured out what kind of vehicle it is?

Not saying that they are wrong but many times folks who don't know anything about military vehicles will call anything with tracks or an enclosed cabin "tanks".
