I recently purchased a helmet that i believe is a m42 for $75 not sure that i got much of a deal because the numbers at the rear of the helmet say 1989. there is a gold german emblem on the side and it does have complete lining and straps. Anyone have advise?

Photos would help to verify the helmet but the 1989 could very well be the production run number. A gold eagle decal would indicate Kriegsmarine issue.

As I always say, it's difficult to judge authenticity of an item just by looking at photos but the shell looks ok. There should be another stamp on the rim of the helmet to indicate the manufacturer.

I can't comment on the decal as it is difficult to see due to the angle of the photo. The liner looks genuine but I can't see enough of the chinstrap to tell if that is the real thing.

here are some more photos...i did go over the rim with a magnifying lens and seen no sign of manufacturing markings..i never have tried to pull the liner, because i'm afraid of damaging something..and not sure if it just pulls out anyway..only markings are that 1989 and those initials written on the leather

In my opinion the helmet looks good at first sight, usually you have a stamp like 'ET..' or 'Q...' that indicates the manufacturer. Maybe the paintjob is to thick.. there could also be stamps on the outside of the liner skeleton ring, so between the shell and the galvanized or aluminium ring. M42 Kriegsmarine is very rare considering that 1942 was the last year that they factory applied decals. Many have been removed after that due to the fact they were visible for the enemy. 75 is very cheap for this helmet you made a great deal. I would say its worth 10 times that, (when decal is original.) decal itself looks good its only not really centered under the ventilation hole, but this could be variation. Liner looks fine but I have my doubts about the chinstrap.

    Regards,
