The Hangman Won't Wait (1948) (Czechoslovakia) Silent Barricade (1949) (Czechoslovakia) The Shop on Main Street, Diamonds of the Night, Closely Watched Trains, The Cremator are highly recommended. Original, realistic, disturbing, non-Hollywoodian.
The Oscar-winning, highest-rated film of the Czechoslovak cinema - The Shop on Main Street. The leading actress (Ida Kamińska) is regarded as one of the greatest Jewish stage actress of all time, her mother (Esther Kamińska) is called the mother of the Yiddish stage. At that time Ida Kamińska was the head of the Jewish National Theater of Poland (today it's Ester Rachel Kamińska and Ida Kamińska State Jewish Theater). Closely Watched Trains, another Czechoslovak Oscar-winning movie. 1944, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, primal sex, laughing beasts, and an ammunition train. Based on a novel written by Bohumil Hrabal, one of the greatest Czech writers of the 20th century. It's worth to notice how un-heroic, unremarkable, "life has to go on" the occupation was. The first part, but click here for for a seamless playlist of the entire movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM3lrSc0Tp4
The Cremator - another non-Hollywoodian, and disturbing to boot movie. The Munich Betrayal, a drop of German blood, and madness. The first part is below, the full movie is here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWpOFdxuY7c
Springman and the SS is a 1946 Czechoslovak animated short film directed by Jiří Brdečka and Jiří Trnka featuring Pérák, the Spring Man of Prague. The film is also known as The Chimney Sweep in the USA. A chimney sweep disguises as a Spring-heeled Jack-like figure during the Nazi occupation. The heroic and mischievous black-clad "Springer", with a mask fashioned out of a sock and defying the curfew, is capable of performing fantastic leaps due to having couch springs attached to his shoes. He taunts the occupying German army sentries and the Gestapo before escaping in a surrealistic, slapstick chase across the darkened city. Pérák, the Spring Man was an urban legend originating from the Czechoslovakian city of Prague during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in the midst of World War II. In the decades following the war, Pérák has also been portrayed as a Czech superhero. [...] "the Springer" was said to leap out from shadowy alleys and startle passers-by. Oral tradition suggests that some of Pérák's leaps were of an extraordinary magnitude, including the act of jumping over train carriages, similar to England's Spring-heeled Jack.
