180th Infantry Regiment After Action Reports

Hello, my wife's grandfather served in K company, 180th, according to his DD214. According to the DD214, he served from Sicily to Germany, earned 5 bronze stars and 2 purple hearts. I found a General Hospital report showing one of the purple hearts was from Anzio. However, I've not been able to find much else. His children seem to believe he may have been a POW at one point, but I've not found anything information about it. Hoping you could help me out. thanks

Found the regimental history online, with lots of platoon photos and rosters. Hope someone finds it useful.

 

The whole Bangor Public Library collection of digitized unit histories is phenomenal. The collection has been mentioned in other threads, but it's very much worth providing the link for the 180th unit history here as well.

I have a grouping from a 180th IR Medic, awarded 2 Purple Hearts, 1 Bronze Star, 4 campaign stars and an Invasion Arrowhead on his ETO ribbon and a Combat Medic badge. Nothing named.

Can anyone help me norrow the list down? The grouping also came with the 108th IR Unit book. From this I've made a rough roster of the line Company Medics. If there is a list or report of Purple Heart awards maybe I can ID this Medic?

I am very interested in getting copies for my father. His father, my grandfather is William Heffernan. He was in the 45th Division, 180th Infantry (Company I - I believe) He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. My father is trying to learn more about his dad's military history. My grandfather departed for the European Theatre on February 1994 and returned to the US September 1944. He was injured during a battle on September 11, 1944. Would you please help?

My Father, PFc Gerald K Tremmel was with the 180th Infantry Regiment, M COMPANY at the end of the war. He was with the 180th from Africa to the end of the war. Would like any info available.
He was a member of an 81mm Mortar crew. His Army Service number was 33257331

 

Update: my father was not assigned to the 180th until Sep/Oct 43. From mid June 43 to then he was with another Unit in N Africa and then Sicily. Still trying to find out what Units he was with then.

 

The best way to find that info is to check the Company Morning Reports for M/180IR for Sept/Oct43. That should tell you the date he was assigned and the unit from which he was transferred. The downside is that MRs have to be obtained in person at the NARA in St. Louis. If you can't go their yourself, there are researchers that provide that service.

 

I'm not sure if your offer is still available, but I would love to get copies, especially of AARs for C Company, and most especially for the period of July-Sept 1943. We are researching a gentleman with ties to a community member, and he died of wounds received in Italy at some point during this time. Thanks!

My grandfather got a Purple Heart on 12 September 1944. He was in Company E 180th Infantry.
Just trying to find out what i can about what happened. He Never talked about it.

Hello - I realize this thread has not had any 'action' for some time but I'm hoping someone may see this and assist if possible. My Father (Charles E Moore-35274234) was in the 180th Co. B from N. Africa thru to Germany. I found the Book about the 180th on-line (my sister had the Hard Copy of my father, but she passed away some time ago). I lost lots of memorabilia that she had custody of since she lived across the country and I couldn't ship it all back.
I have some records, incl his Discharge and GO#126-45thHQ-(2-May-45) page excerpt of record of his Silver Star Award; GO#11-180thHQ(4/23/44) - Combat Infantry Badge; GO#257-(6/28/45) for his Purple heart(20-Apr-45). He was Discharged as E6 Squad Leader of LMG Squad. I am hoping to find the AAR for any of these actions in the scanned pdfs this thread mentions. Have these been attached to this site/forum or somewhere else that I haven't been able to find? I plan to request full records - if available - from St.Louis with a SF180, but Fire damage may hinder that so I am posting here.

I'm presuming the dates you listed are the dates of the GOs. Do you know the date he was wounded or the date of the action for which the SS was awarded? The CIB would have been awarded for a period of time he was in combat, rather than for a specific date.

 

Hi Tommy - Sorry or the delay - I don't check this email acct often. Yes, I have the dates. The Silver Star was awarded for action on January 14, 1945. The Purple Heart was awarded for action on April 20, 1945. He was discharged on Oct-03-1945 and then served until 1965 in the USAR in Ohio.
