70th Anniversary Battle off Samar

Misplaced my account here for a bit but anyway, I'd say the main reason that Halsey took the battleships after Ozawa is that as he had been forced to use a battleship as his flagship, he personally HAD to be part of what he thought would be the grand final battle with the dreaded Japanese carrier fleet. He personally could not let it go.

Interestingly enough, in April 1945, Ray Spruance authorized Morton Deyo's old prewar battleships to attempt to intercept the battleship Yamato partly because Spruance was flying his flag aboard the battleship New Mexico and thus had Mitcher and Arleigh Burke not spoiled the fight by sending massive carrier strikes to ruin the party Spruance would have had a ringside seat to the last Battleship on battleship action in history. It seems not even Spruance was immune to the romanticized idea of one last surface fight.

 

He he...They couldn't do it in multi-volumes either, since volumes 4, 6, and 7 were never done. Volume 4 would have been one hell of a read, shame it never came about.
