I read with great interest the history of the 30th Infantry regiment.
One of my relatives, Yves Le Boulch was KIA in this regiment (november 12 ,1943. Maybe near Mignano, on the way to Monte Cassino)
I don't know how is it possible to learn more about this young man, beyond the laconic informations of http://www.wwiimemorial.com/

Hello and thank you all for your service,

I am trying to gather information about my uncle, Frank McKenna, related to his service in WWII.

I have attempted to obtain his DD214 from the archives in St Louis but have been informed that the records were lost in the fire in the 1970s.

I would like some advise as to other places to search to obtain similar information related to his service.

I have his personal information, including dates of service and US Army serial number.

I know my uncle was in the 3rd Infantry Division, 30th Infantry Regiment and served in North Africa and Tunisia. I am trying to get more specific information such as the battalion or company that he served and any campaigns he was involved in.

I have a copy of the History of the 3rd Infantry Division, edit by Donald Taggart, 1947 and my uncle is listed in the roster as part of the 30th Regiment. Also I have a short family history written by my aunt which states he was assigned to the 3rd Inf. Div. along with photos of him in Tunisia and Sicily.

I also purchased the History of the 30th Infantry Regiment World War II, by Rupert Prohme. These two references are a great source of information. However, I am very interested in identifying a more specific unit assignment for my uncle to say with confidence the campaigns and operations he was involved in.

Would you be able to assist?

Thank you for your attention to my request.

    John McKenna

Hi John -- don't know if you'll see this, but my grandfather was also in the 30th Infantry (Company H) -- PM me if you want to exchange notes some time.

Thanks for posting McCabe. I really dont have much more information than I posted. I was looking for a source of information to identify a battalion or company that my uncle might have been assigned. If you have any references I would greatly appreciate it.

John, if you could post more information it would help. Hometown, service number, dates of service, etc would be of great help. Check with Jeff (Slipdigit) or Keith (kodiakbeer) who have much info on the 30th.

Woops. My mistake. I read 30th Division, not regiment. Sorry.

His dates of service will help determine what campaigns he was in.

Frank was born in Ireland. He enlisted in Brooklyn NY and returned to NY after being discharged. He passed away in the Los Angeles area in 1990. This is his US Army Serial Number 32349385

I found this document on line. History of the Third ID. Frank is listed on p 523 as a member of the 30th Inf. Reg.

Based on his dates, I think we was eligible for the following campaigns:
    Algeria-French Morocco
    Tunisia
    Sicily
    Naples-Foggia
    Anzio
    Rome-Arno
Probably Southern France (commenced 15 Aug 44)

In addition to the campaigns Lou listed, he may have also received credit for the Rhineland and Ardennes-Alsace campaigns.

Johnny -- Seeing as how you've already checked with NARA, another avenue is to check with your uncle's hometown records office, clerk's office etc. -- it is quite possible that he filed a copy of his discharge papers upon returning home from the work -- this was a common practice for GIs. Contact his hometown's local government and ask if they still have custody of those records and where they're stored. This is how I obtained a copy of my grandfather's DD214.

Also, just because NARA said all of his records burned doesn't mean it's true. They told me the same thing. I later hired a researcher who uncovered burned (but intact) medical records that helped confirm some of my own research. If you want to give it a try, goldenarrowresearch.com was who I want through - Geoff was very helpful and the prices he charged were fair.

I think those two campaigns are after he left the unit. Check the dates.

I also used Geoff at Golden Arrow. He found much more than I thought possible.

You're right, they started after he left, my mistake -- even if he had been with his unit at the start of the campaign, he needed what 30 days to qualify?
