Indeed! The French, Brittish and the Belgians saved the western countries. The Russians and the Brittish saved the Eastern front and front near Turkey.
They were all part but dont forget Canada Vimmy Ridge and Pachendale changed the tide in the war to the Allies, without those two victories who knows what would have happend. Dont forget USA though, they were part of the final push, and I believe South Africa played a role also. [ 23. March 2003, 10:46 PM: Message edited by: Brad T. ]
I just have to make a comment a very long time after the original discussion, but the quote "the USA as they gave ...." Britain paid for everything received from the U.S. and only paid off that debt paid in full a few years ago, when according to this article they also paid Canada (which I found odd as I understood it was at 0% for cash, and goods werer given as Mutual Aid Plan). To quote something else I read recently and cannot recall, Canada punched above its weight in both the First and Second World Wars. I think the early timing of its aid in forces, food, and other supplies was vital to Britain and to other Allied countries to maintain Britain's freedom, creating a supply depot and base for future offenses. Other Dominion Countries like Australia, New Zealand, and India also provided a great deal of the same. WWII transformed Canada from a purely agrarian economy/lifestyle to one with industries built in order to supply Britain and those who needed arms/vehicles, etc. That being said, the ability to move from defensive to offensive strategies did require the involvement of the manpower and industrial might of the USA. The sheer volume of men and ability to put industrial production in overdrive for supplies, made all the difference between being able to obtain victory. I do sometimes wonder, in the "what if" category - that if the U.S. had become involved in 1914 instead of 1917, or 1939 instead of 1941 - how many lives would have been spared and would it have been possible to have victory sooner?
Just an Americanism, really "I gave him the car and he gave me $500." Charity is only implicit by those who are not up to speed on the matter.
