I am helping some relatives from my wife's side of the family do some genealogy research. They are of Swabian German heritage, and the family settled in Serbia sometime in the late 19th century, then immigrated to Australia right after World War II. They are having to piece together their history with tidbits here and there that were brought to Australia. A lot the family elders didn't talk about the past, and are deceased now. Official documents such as birth, marriage certificates, family bibles, etc. were left behind or destroyed in the war.

So this is where the mystery of this uniform comes in. My wife's great-grandfather was executed by Tito's communist partisans at the end of the war, and his family was imprisoned in Tito's labor camps that were built to hold people of German heritage that were in Yugoslavia. The family always knew that their grandfather/great-grandfather had been executed by the Communists, but didn't exactly know why. He was just assumed that it was because he was German. Anyway, one of my wife's uncles has recently been to Europe and did some research, and has found evidence that his grandfather may have been in the SS, or a unit associated with the SS. After doing some of my own research, I've read about the Serbian Volunteer Corps, which assisted the SS in committing atrocities in Yugoslavia. If this is the case, it would make sense why he was executed by Tito's people.

This is a supposed picture of her great-grandfather in uniform. I was hoping that someone with much more knowledge could tell me if this is indeed a uniform of the Serbian Volunteer Corps, and if it isn't, what it may a uniform of. I apologize at the quality of the photo, but this is from her uncle in Australia (he had located the picture in some file or archives in Serbia) so the original is not with the family.

    Thank you very much!
