Hello Folks, My name is Joshua (known as Professor_Smith on a lot of various forums). I am the creator of a Battlefield 1942 minimod, called HTroop. I have been creating/editing/perfecting my mod for the last 16+ years, and I am only a couple months from finally finishing it. However, one of my most recent edits to the mod, has slowed me down a bit. I am correcting the camera views of various stationary machine guns, lining up the camera with their sights. I have been able to correct all the Stat MGs so far, but now I have to work on the MG34. However, when I view the weapon (whether in the game, or in pictures online), it seems as if there are 3 to 4 sight positions on the weapon, and I cannot figure out exactly which ones to use (to look through) besides the obvious forward sight at the end of the barrel. I was hoping that someone here, might be able to tell me/point out to me the correct way of looking through an MG34's sights (or even post a picture of looking through the sights themselves with a camera)? Please, anything anyone can do to help, would be very appreciated. I have attached a picture of the weapon in my mod, to give you a better idea of my dilemma. As you can see in the screenshot, the crosshairs are positioned higher (this is where the camera position is currently sitting; of course, I will be lowering it, and lining it up with the correct sights, once I figure this issue out). Thank You, Joshua Professor_Smith
The rear sight on the MG34 is an offset "ladder" type. There is one sight leaf, which is adjustable from 200 to 2000 meters. To aim, you line up the front post with the "v" notch on the rear sight leaf. To adjust for range you depress the thumb nut and move the slider (attached to the sight leaf) up or down. The rear sight can be folded down (90 degrees forward) for transport. NOTE: This is a god-awful sight. When set to short ranges, I find it very difficult to get a proper sight picture due to the very low position of the sight leaf above the receiver of the gun. The MG42 had numerous mechanical improvements, and one of them is a better [traditional Mauser-style] tangent sight IMHO.
Thank You George. However, I'm a bit unsure of which notch in the screenshot I posted, is the "v" notch. Is the rear sight notch the one that looks like a field goal post, located at the top of the "ladder"? Or is it the lower notch/space near the base of the "ladder" that looks like an E turned on its back? Or is the rear sight the space on that arm that protrudes on the right side of the "ladder" above the barrel? Thank You Again, Josh
It is the one which protrudes from the ladder to the right. However, there are some issues with the model: the sight leaf extends too far from the ladder the v notch is the wrong profile the sight leaf should be attached to the slider. this is not the case in the model -- the slider is in a low (i.e. close-range) position yet the leaf is still near the top of the ladder
As George posted the issue is that the BF1942 model was incorrectly designed. The FH model was much more accurate. Not perfect but better. Forgotten Hope 2 - Internet Movie Firearms Database - Guns in Movies, TV and Video Games
Thank You Both! Both of your replies and detail helps me in two different ways for my mod. Thank you again! Josh
One other thing. If any of you have an actual mg34 with the sites I was talking about (the adjustable distance sight), would you be able to tell me how high in inches the slider sight is (at the line marking between 20 & 18) from the top of the gun? Also, at that distance setting, at what angle (in degrees) is the distance sight, compared to the forward sight? Thank You, Josh
