My great uncle served in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy during WWII. Unfortunately I have far more questions than answers even after finding his discharge papers. What I know: He was discharged from Battery B of the 363rd AAA Battalion, but apparently that unit never went overseas, so his service was with some other unit. He is credited with participation in the following campaigns: Algeria French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno. He was a field lineman He returned to the United States in August of 1944, arriving in September of that year, abut remained in the service until June of 1945. What I don't know: What unit would he have done his overseas service with? None of the units I can find credited with these campaigns were both at Sicily, but not at Anzio. He did bring home a bracelet listing several places, including Anzio, but is apparently not credited with having been there. Why would he have been rotated back to the States so early in the war?
If you can post a copy of his discharge papers some here are very good at figuring out details from them. They tend to be a bit arcane to us non experts.
The info is from the discharge papers, but I don't actually have them, I had a family member read it to me over the telephone.
There's often quite a bit there but, as I said it's in a rather arcane series of acronyms, numbers, and terse statements. There are some people here who are very good at both interpreting them and digging out other info. They should be along before too long but if you can get the other family member to scan the document and post it here it will help.
Let's start with basic information. What was his name? Where was he from? What year was he born? Died? We can start from there.
