Greetings all, Just wondering if anyone here could explain the meaning behind the 2 symbols on my no4 mkII bayonet. The symbols being the Thing that looks like a B rotated clockwise 90°, and the other kind of flattened U shape above the o in no4. Noting it comes with a cover stamped 1944 and mk I, could anyone give me a general idea on the value for this? Thanks
While it depends somewhat on where you are located, it would be worth 20 - 30 bucks USD. Lee Enfield No4 "pig sticker" bayonets are not scarce.
Welcome to the Forum MJ... Sorry this is a bit rushed - the 'flattened B' is in fact a Crown factory acceptance mark. The 'SSP' (?) on the scabbard may be Sheffield Steel Products....will look for the rest later. As GP says, not worth big bucks, but as with most things these are getting a bit scarcer. ten years ago dealers almost gave these away, but now they've become collectable in their own right.
Martin John Thanks for writing your post. It made me look more carefully at my bayonet for my Mk 1*. Where you have got deep and crisp lettering, my "sticker" has just barely legible letters. I can make out "ENFIELD" but the rest is undecipherable. Nothing on the scabbard. Paid $25 for it so GP is right again!
On a side note how would you guys go about cleaning/preservation. I mean I want to display it with some other world war odds and ends and it currently has a splash of gold paint on it and plenty of grease and grime. Should I just leave it as is or tidy it up?
