I was stationed there in 07 to 08 in Kunsan and TDY to Osan I 03 and 08. Kansan was smaller and Osan more city like. I think I liked Kunsan more.

Did little traveling in the country unlike other places I’ve been. I got into a routine and seemed to be always on call for exercise and other details. People were nice and food was good. My Koran workers kept me busy locally, so I had little incentive to travel.

I am new here as well. My name is Judith Croy, and my father was a US Army tugboat captain who was involved in the DD landing on Omaha Beach. I am 71 years old. I am interested in any historical information concerning the role tugboats played in towing and sinking of the concrete caissons across the English Channel to set up the artificial harbor off Omaha Beach. I would like to contribute my fathers war stories. I could never get him to tape record his stories, but I remember them well.

Judith, Welcome to the forums. Do you know the name of your father's tugboat/s? I have a list of US Army vessels and would like to look it up.

The Army's "Navy" during WWII had more vessels than the US Navy. It was a major factor in winning the war, and the contributions of the Army's "sailors" are not well known.

I look forward to learning about your father's service.

Is it Grover's "Army Ships and Watercraft of WWII"? I found it to be very interesting.

Hi Judith. Welcome to the forum. Why don't you start your own thread with some of your father's stories? It would attract more attention, and maybe some of your questions can be addressed.

Yes, my father captained both LTs and STs. The LT was I believe the “ocean going” tug, and the ST was smaller and had less horsepower, and was for the harbor. I actually have a couple of numbers of the boats. I found a site that had the shipyard the tugs were built in, which was very interesting. And I discovered that there are very few WWII tugs still around. Tracing the history of each is fascinating, when they were built, what theatre they went to, what service hey saw, and of course, how they ended, sunk, scrapped, or, still working! Or, in a maritime Museum. Well, I think I found one of my fathers ships in Aarhus, lovingly cared for. I think to myself, my dad would be so happy that one of them survived. I need to send photos to those a Danish guys to let them know who was once the captain. I bet they would be happy. I have photos taken of my dad’s crew on the boat, and him in the wheelhouse. I have a lot of questions for you guys. I could never talk him into dictating his stories into a tape recorder, although he did do it for his family recollections. I have quite a number of his letters, piles of them, written to my mom, and to his mom. I think a lot can be pieced together from them. What I do not have is his dossier, which was one of the many that were destroyed in the big fire in the military archives in St Louis in the 1970s. What a tremendous loss! I wish they had put all of it on microfiche and stored another place as a backup. Really, for so much history, personal recollections are all that remains. I am excited that perhaps I can get some expert help in tracking down details, and I hope to share much more with you. Thanks!
