""British Soldiers: Deserters, Rebels and Renegades, 1790-1860."

    Tuesday 11th September 2018 at 7.30pm

Nick Mansfield continues his social history of the rank and file soldiers of the British army in the nineteenth century.
This talk will discuss soldiers taking foreign service, often after deserting from the British army. Though often tolerated until the French Revolution and the rise of the nation state, from the 1790s such renegades often supported political change and even revolution and were anathema to the authorities. Such rebels though persisted into the Victorian period.
This colourful world will be explored through fascinating military characters. We will meet John Oswald, former officer of the 42nd Highlanders, turned French Revolutionary, who met his death serving against the Chouan royalist rebels in 1793. Colonel Edward Despard, former comrade in arms of Nelson, was hanged after trying to recruit guardsmen to overthrow the government in 1802. ‘Count’ Francis Maceroni, a Mancunian Italian, was commissioned by Murat, became a South American revolutionary General and attempted to ferment revolution in Britain in 1831. Renegades in imperial wars are also covered, like Sergeant Major Robert Nichol, who fought with the Indian Mutineers of 1857 and Private Kimble Bent, adopted by the Maori tribe he was fighting against in New Zealand.

    "A Family in the Trenches"

    Tuesday 13th November 2018 at 7.30pm
World War One; You never know until you look!

This evening’s talk by Roger Bigg is not about quite a lot!

It is not an in-depth talk on what caused it, or how it started; it’s not even concerned with it’s consequences on World history. It’s not about whether it was right or wrong, nor is it about the politics of the conflict.

However, given that almost every family in the country was directly impacted in some way by the war, what this talk is about is the direct impact of the war on one extended family.

Just prior to his mother’s death, Roger Bigg was given a box of family memorabilia. Intrigued, Roger began researching its contents; this is the story of what he uncovered.

MMHS' contribution to to mark the final year of the World War One centenary and part of the The Royal British Legion's movement to say 'Thank You' to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed, rebuilt and changed the nation.

"Cold War British Army Intelligence Operations in East Germany"

    Tuesday 12th February 2019 at 7.30pm
The little known story of the intelligence gathering duties in the former East Germany performed by BRIXMIS during the Cold War.

BRIXMIS ( British Commanders’-in-Chief Mission to the Soviet Forces in Germany) was an intelligence organisation worked throughout the Cold War years from 1946 to 1990 gathering intelligence in the former Soviet Occupation Zone of East Germany on the threat posed to the West and NATO by the 20 Soviet and 6 East German Army Divisions and their Air Forces deployed there.

"Naval Warfare in the Aegean during WW1"

    Tuesday 12th March 2019 at 7.30pm

Author and historian Stuart Hadaway gives a slightly off-beat talk covering some of the lesser-known aspects of the First World War in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean. The talk will fall into three parts:
    1) The Voyage of HMS Doris. This cruiser spent the opening months of the war raiding and landing parties on the shores of Palestine, Syria and Turkey, blowing things up and causing diplomatic incidents.
    2) Port Said Seaplane Squadron. An interesting little unit, formed of French aeroplanes with mixed French Navy and British Army crews, operating off captured German ships captained by British Army officers, supported by Royal Navy Reserve officers and senior petty officers, and Cypriot and Syrian crews. They provided a vital and little known service!
    3) Cattle Rustlers of the Aegean. Over the summer of 1916, the Royal Navy launched extensive and large scale raids using Greek irregular troops on the Anatolian coast, destroying defences and stealing tens of thousands of head of sheep, cows, camels, horses and bullocks to feed the fleet.

"31st (or thirty worst) Division Fact or Fiction"
    Tuesday 9th April 2019 at 7.30pm

The 31st Division was a pals division of the First World War. It is perhaps best known for its failed attack on the village of Serre on the 1st July 1916 as part of the largely disastrous opening day of The Battle of the Somme.
During the war the division gained the nickname “Thirty Worst”.
In this talk, Pen Richardson, will explore the origins of the nickname and attempt to assess how fitting a title it was.
