Hello all I have a friend who is researching her father's family wartime history for a biography and she is floundering as everyone she might have asked is longer here. She believes her father was RNVR but then just before D Day he was posted as follows and officially referred to as a 'Temporary Acting leading signalman' 14 May 1944 to 30 Sept 1944 yet family tales refer to him as a commando, any thoughts on the details below would be appreciated. "This is on the second page of Dads service record covering the D day period . I believe RNB SS7 refers to Royal Navy Beach Signals Section 7. I think he was a commando on either Gold or Juno Beach. His photographs mention Le Hamel and Arromanches. He was a RNVR - He was on these 3 ships prior to D Day; HMS Vansittart HMS Dundonald 11 HMS Range ® later known as Hms Caesar - He was Signals/communications Born in Huyton (I think) ,Liverpool on 5 . 7 . 1920 , eldest of 4. Was at Dunkirk AND Normandy. Thanks for any help." Thank you in anticipation
Is there any chance your friend could supply you with an image of the record, and that you could post it here? Mark
Thanks for your reply Mark I have tried to compress the file but it is still showing as too large to upload will try again tomorrow
Welcome to the forums! Sounds like he might have been a beach commando- Royal Naval Beach Commandos 1942-45 HMS Dundonald II was actually a shore training establishment at Troon in Ayrshire- COMBINED OPS TRAINING ESTABLISHMENTS
Welcome to the forums. I can see that you have been helped already. You might also cross-post at our sister site ww2talk.com. They have a more British outlook and you might get even more help.

According to a Wikipedia page: Beach groups - Wikipedia your assumption regarding the Signal Section and Juno Beach would appear to be correct. Section 7 was supporting the 3rd Canadian Division in the Mike sector of Juno beach. Mark
