Lovely model! The Seawolf class epitomizes the Navy/Pentagon's incoherence with regard to nomenclature. It comprises three ships named for three completely different things: Seawolf (fish) Connecticut (state) Jimmy Carter (person) The project to design the class was called SSN-21 (21st century submarine), but then that became the hull number, so the sequence is now: ......SSN-773 (Los Angeles class) SSN-21-23 SSN-774.......(Virginia class)
Next to last time I was at Chicago I visited U-505. They have an entrance cut in the side, a lubber's hole(?). As we went in one lady asked how they closed up the hole when they dived? I replied "They had a screen door for that." THAT is a rif on the old line, "as useful as a screen door on a submarine." I know, you're sorry you asked.
Oh, now I understand. The only sub I ever visited and walked through was the Bacuna at the Philadelphia waterfront where they also had the Olympia, admiral Dewey’s old flag ship.
