New Midway movie:

When I see these movies come out I always show the clip to my 18 year old. He is a typical teen/adult (only by law) who is heavy into sports and leaves for college next year to play lacrosse. He does not have the passion of WW2 like me but does have the respect for that generation which included his grandfather. I showed him the clip and he said “ Wow, cool battle scenes. We should go see it”. I guess I consider it a success if that generation keeps getting exposed since it is not taught in school like it was when I was a young dinosaur. I am sure there are historically inaccurate scenes and actors being too Hollywood. If I can see the movie with my son then have a conversation after about what really happen, I am more than happy to fight through all the Hollywood stuff. Just an old dinosaur opinion.

 

I saw it this afternoon. Went into with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised. Yes there were some historical inaccuracies and some questionable dialogue, but admittedly it is a good movie, even for those amongst this group who knows much more WW2 trivia and history that the average man. Of course the purists of magnificent book “Shattered Sword” will pick this flick to pieces, but it’s well worth the watch. Lots of attention to detail was made and I appreciate that, especially for period movies which are among my favs. When it comes out on Netflix I’ll study it in length, especially the 94 seconds I missed hustling to the pissatorium and back (96oz Coke Zero, dang you!).

You’ll see many familiar faces of the actors (including Woody from Cheers, Long Duc Dong aka “the Donger” from Sixteen Candles and Everybody’s All American). Also there’s lots of new faces as well. Maybe there’re not so new, just not familiar to me.

In the meantime I’ll read up on as much as I can like I do on movies that I really like (or wonder “what the hell did I just watch”) while walking out of the theater.

Go see it. You’ll be surprised. Just try not to pick it to death. Remember, it’s not a boring documentary. It’s a Hollywood movie. And they did a pretty good job if you look at it that way.

Eeeww...I hadn't been into a theatre for 20 years before going to see "Danger Close" - I was reminded that the surround sound and massive bass gives an excellent "addition" to the battle scenes.

 

How was "Danger Close" ? It does not appear to have a planned theatrical release in Canada, but I am looking forward to seeing it.

 

I did a review on the Battle of Long Tan thread...
It was great...the vets who were there spotted a number of mistakes but came out saying they understood it was a movie and they enjoyed it. They said it was close enough to put them back there and have those emotions come flooding back...
The battle/charge bugle the VC used especially had an effect...

 

Go and sit on the front row Lou. It'll be more realistic when the dive bombers go into their dives at the carriers. Raise your hands like when the roller coaster starts it's descent.

 

..I went with my wife to see a movie about 4 years ago--$50 for tickets. 1 popcorn and 1 soda!!! there's not many movies I want to see....now I did like Anthropoid ..and I would've liked that at the theater---they did a good job with 1940s decor/etc ..but most of the stuff now is for the teenie boppers

 

I have the Regal Cinema just down the road at the Valley Mall in Hagerstown, Md. We can get senior’s prices, wonderful, save a couple of bucks. My son and his wife often give us a gift card for $25.00, even more wonderful. We went today to see, “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood “ with Tom Hanks. I like hm. He did Mr. Rogers quite well. Midway was playing there too. Heard it was rather good but with computer generated battle scenes? Is that correct? I suppose I could go myself, my wife prefers Mr. Rogers. The movie was supposed to start at 2:10, or so it said on their web site. I know, need to see the previews. Some good ones are coming for Christmas. “Cats” with Taylor Swift. Love the music, saw it on Broadway. So, after 25 minutes of previews and the same commercials that you see on TV, the movie starts. Never saw that many commercials at a move in my life. Absolutely ridiculous. But, the movie was good, kinda funny, kinda sad. Hanks at his best. Popcorn and sodas are expensive, to say the least. We ate at the food court before we went in.

..I just watched 1976 Midway yesterday....just like the TV series Baa Baa Black Sheep, I watched Midway --when it came out in 1976--in awe...of course all I would do all day was read WW2 Pacific Theater back then in the summer
.. now, Midway 1976 looks awful....dialogue, acting, haircuts, planes, etc.....
..I'm watching Tora Tora Tora right now and they say they didn't want any big name actors in it to ''mess up'' the movie--and they did it right .....
...in Midway, Edward Albert as Heston's son in the movie, is terrible ....
...Heston's part seems like it is herky jerky/choppy/etc ....he's moving all over the place
....in one scene it looks like Korean War era jets on the carrier ..some scenes no one and nothing is on the flight deck
..directing is terrible....in one scene the high ranking Japanese are on the flight deck casually talking about this or that--when one of them suddenly spots US dive bombers...it looks very ridiculous and the acting is horrible
..on Midway Island scenes, many Marines, etc in the background don't talk to each other, etc....it looks like an amateur directing it....like some high school play
..the guards checking Heston as he comes to the gates, etc look awful--acting/uniforms/haircuts,etc..they look like guards at a mall
etc

 

I agree about the '76 version of Midway there bronk...looks clunky now but at the time it was popular. Always been surprised a Midway movie wasn't made back in the 50's..a period of war movies galore..turned into a Otto Preminger or a John Ford sweeping epic or by the great Japanese director Akita Kurosawa.

 

good call.....I've been watching Preminger's In Harm's Way.....I just watched Tora Tora Tora today and I must say the special effects/airplane scenes are amazing .....
..maybe making a Midway movie back then was too ''complicated''----?
