...is that not better than the USS Ronald Reagan....?...Reagan wasn't in the Navy...and named while he was alive....that's a bit ''?'?? = goofy
Well, Carter was Navy, but his polices as President really undercut the military. Reagan essentially rebuilt the US military from the ground up.
yes. I know...but naming it while he was alive seems like ''idolatry of a dictator'' type deal ....I think they should go back to the WW2 names/etc ..I'm not a fan of naming after POTUSs....
What did Admiral Rickover say...We name them after Men, fish don't vote. Or something to that effect.
It's a good name. He was one of the few that didn't lose his head in the surprise attack. He went to his station, manned the gun and began shooting. This almost makes up for naming a ship after Harvey Milk. Do the cooks still man the guns on Navy Vessels? They do in the Coast Guard, at least the M2s and similar armaments. The bigger cutters with the anti-missile thingies are manned by specialists. .
GQ stations vary with ships. Most of the time the cooks would go to the repair parties, so the could be peeled off to do galley work if GQ went on for a good while.
I think that it's best to name ships after men like Dorie Miller than politicians. Unless the politicians in question served with some sort of distinction in the military, or like what was pointed out about Ronald Reagan and his efforts to build the military back up after years of neglect.
When the Pentagon decided to start naming submarines after cities - Los Angeles class - instead of marine creatures.
Carter had a submarine named after him, also of course while he was still living. It's been suggested that this was done so the Navy could avoid naming a carrier for him. The three-ship Seawolf class show how confused the Navy's naming "system" has gotten: Seawolf Connecticut Jimmy Carter
