I almost forgot the best from my Darwin Airport series...My WW2 hero Clive Robertson Caldwell. DSO, DFC & Bar (28 July 1911 – 5 August 1994) was the leading Australian air ace of World War II. He is officially credited with shooting down 28.5 enemy aircraft in over 300 operational sorties, including an ace in a day. In addition to his official score, he has been ascribed six probables and 15 damaged.
During 1942, Australia came under increasing pressure from Japanese forces, and Caldwell was recalled by the RAAF, to serve as the wing leader of No. 1 (Fighter) Wing, comprising No. 54 Squadron RAF, No. 452 Squadron RAAF and No. 457 Squadron RAAF. The wing was equipped with the Supermarine Spitfire and in early 1943 was posted to Darwin, to defend it against Japanese air raids. - Wiki

Ive always liked how his initials and the Australian roundel makes the word croc...something very apt for Darwin.

I have two friends who moved to Queensland last year. One of them stated his reason for immigrating was "to wrassle with them salties". His application was accepted. I think that was very Australian of the review board. :D

I think anything under four meters it would be an even match. He didn't shoot bears, he scared them to death.

    Aussie Rules Football...
When a player catches the ball, and it hasn't been touched by anyone else, its called a "mark". The player can play on or go back and have an unimpeded kick to a player or the goals if he's close enough. Its important to get the ball before anyone else...even if your own player touches the ball with just a finger tip the umpire will yell "play on!" So players try to get the ball ahead of everyone else.
This can result in a "speckie" (short for spectacular mark) or sometimes called a "Cazaly", the man who made jumping for the mark famous back in the day...Here are some for your pleasure, note the height they jump. They are allowed to climb the back of any player including their own to get the ball first...

    Darwn's Beer can Regatta...
Every year Darwin celebrates the end of the "stinger season"...Box jelly fish. Once again people can go back into the water (the crocs and sharks are still there)
Given how much beer is consumed, the obvious idea is a regatta involving boats made of beer cans...This has been going for decades (started in 1974)

At the time, the second most industrialized country in the world needed a tank. And came up with this:
