I'm trying to trace any living relatives or Service History of this guy. The label is on a magazine owned by a friend and she would like to know more about him.

The only other information I have is that he possibly - or a guy with the same name - passed back in 2002.

Probably Ernest Hillman Jr (178963). He was an ensign in 1944 with a date of rank of 8 Aug 1942, so entirely possible he was a LTJG by mid-1945. The only other E Hillman, Earl R (173227), was already a LT in 1944 and had been since May 1943.

Your 2002 death subject (from find a grave?) may, may, be the Ernest Hillman Jr in question as the year of birth, 1912, matches the USNR Register.

    Thanks sincerely for this reply.

I'm - and friend Julie - in the U.K. so please forgive my total ignorance of US terminology : does USNR mean US Navy Reserve? If so, how 'open' are the files? Are they, for example, online? According to the obituary - kindly located via a Normandy Veterans and Friends Facebook page - the guy had no surviving children but did have nephews.
