The US was isolationist until the Fall of France, and then public opinion swung toward "we have to do something about those people."

I think it's been mentioned in previous discussion here that American isolationism of the time wasn't what many people today may invision either.

I'm not so sure of that. As Opana has mentioned he probably could have gotten a declaration of war against Germany prior to PH. However his military advisors were asking for another 6 months to a year and he IMO didn't want the vote to be close as entering the war divided could have presented some serious issues down stream.

Jeannette Rankin's reason for not voting for the Declaration against Japan was "no declaration of war should be unanimous". I don't recall her explaining what she meant by that at the time.

As I understand it, since she as a woman could not go to war, she was reluctant to send anyone. She had also voted against war in WWI, although she was not the only one on that occasion.

    That is correct.

    She explained it thusly
It made her very very unpopular, resulting in many threats against her life which resulted in her needing a police escort and costing her reelection.

Her second vote revealed something of the pressure she was under.

Doubt it...like her or not, she voted as she believed, as such, I don't think she felt any pressure to vote against war with Japan...That came after the vote.

I never said I doubted her or disliked her. And yeah, of course people would be pressing her to vote for the dec-o-war before the vote happened, the assumption was that it would unanimous.

When I was twelve I was wading through Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and driving my teacher crazy with questions about the war.
