Looking around on the internet trying to find any more specific information on my grandfather and his WW2 service. When my dad was alive he tried to get some military records, but they're apparently gone now. Are there any sources available these days that can give any information at all? All I know is that my grandfather supposedly was in the 101st airborne, and his last name is Kroeger, and he sometimes went by John and sometimes Joseph, my dad wasn't even sure which one his "real" first name was. Any hints on where to go would be appreciated. DJ
Fold3 - Historical military records If you can give us more information, it would be easier to search. Birth date? Place of birth? Any other relevant material would help.
Thanks @MarChant. Looks like a potentially good reference to get his rank and company, but too expensive for me. @LRusso216, I'll look around and see if I can find any of that. I believe he was born in Missouri around 1910, but not sure.
Since the info you have is kind of sketchy, I would suggest starting with some basic genealogy research first. Start with your parents info and work backwards. Genealogy websites are great for that because they use official records rather than oral history. Once you get his name, birth date and location, etc nailed down, it will be easier to research his military service.
