    I did the DNA test thing last autumn, thinking I was mostly Limey and Irish, with a little German, French, and Injun mixed in for good measure. We have a done a good bit of genealogical research and have been able to trace nearly all lines back to an old world origin, except for a couple of Native Americans.

    Well, according to the test, genetically I am nearly 50% Western European (German, French and the like, 20% British Isles (including Ireland) and 15% SCANDINAVIAN. We have no idea who this Nordic person (or persons) is as I have never come across anyone from there in my lineage. Guess he was the milkman. The remaining percentages were other, such as the aforementioned Injun and other European ethnicities

    I am a mutt, which if Bill Murray is right is the best thing of all. The pedigree includes English, Scotch-Irish, a little plain old Irish, a little Welsh, Czech, Jewish, and a little German.

    Doesn't have to be from one person, you could get 2.5% from several people.

    Until the Norse came to Ireland it didn't rally have any cities. They founded almost all of those. then there were the various Norse incursions into England and Scotland during the 700--1100 AD period. They actually ruled a good portion of Northern England and parts of Scotland for some time. The 50% Western European could mean Angles, Jutes, and Saxons i.e "English" unless they broke that out in some way.

    Still waiting on the test results, but as far as I know it's a toss up between German and English. As lwd pointed out, just about everyone from a European background is a "mutt". So I'm just going to say "northern European".

    Father's side: 100% German. Mother's side: Welsh, Scottish, German, and a bit of Irish.

    Recent research by my brother traced my maternal grand father back to Andre Marcil dit L Espagnol who arrived in New France in 1663.

    On my father's side, mainly English with one Irish great-grandmother, whose sister emigrated to NYC, so I have distant cousins in America. On my mother's side, English, specifically the North East, with Scottish ancestry further back. Haven't done the DNA test but have done some family history research.

    I was digging around some genealogy sites a few weeks ago. We had dead-ended one line to a female named Cinderella. Another researcher had found marriage and death records for her parents and were able to link her line to Switzerland.

    I wasn't expecting that.

    Sooooo, add Swiss to English, Irish, Scots, Welsh (we think), Creek Indian, German, French, and apparently Scandinavian, as that ethnic group showed up heavily in the DNA study we did a couple of years ago.

    I was thinking about this the other day, seems I've had a lot of time the last few months to do that and wonder: How long until we're so diluted we are all basically either Mutts or Citizens?

    I've come to the conclusion I'm American. I was born here, my parents were born here, my parents parents were born here my parents parents parents were born here and my parents parents parents parents were born here and then it gets interesting.
    Maternally the family one side has been traced back to 1620 New England with the usual blending intermixed. Paternally since the early 1800's with my dads mother side traced to Scotland 1387 where there is a mention of a charter of Niddrie from King Robert III. Even back that far I guess our Family has always had a connection to the Military. The Black Watch, Knights, Earls and such.

    Since I don't have my own estate I'll stick with plain old American I guess.

    Probably mostly Russian genes, as a long time ago our people left the Siberian area and the clever ones went to Hungary and the stupid ones to Finland. We have very good relations with Hungary as we are originally the same people.

    For me it depends how far back you go.

    Immediate ancestors, I'm half English (well, Yorkshire) and half Scottish. I like to describe myself as British!

    If you go far enough back, I'm Scandinavian. My Scottish side came over with William the Conquerer, Yorkshire side has a good dose of a Scandinavian-specific medical condition (lots of Norwegians and Danes settled in Yorkshire). Weirdly my wife visited Norway shortly before we married and one of the guys she was staying with was my doppelganger!
