To what are you listening?

He takes his pop music very seriously...maybe too seriously...I remember during the Band Aid "coming together", he seemed to have gained a reputation for being an aloof twat...I mean Midge Ure?? The name should be a red flag...Glass of pretentious anyone?

 

Artists are artists...I recall reading that Michael Jackson was making a duet " The girl is mine" in Freddie Mercury's studio but Michael kept on changing the song all the while and finally Freddie kicked him out.

 

I've been on an 80s binge lately, and few exemplified that era as well as Robert Palmer:

 

A friend recently drew my attention to the band (a duo, really) Pomplamoose. IMO, their best stuff is when they do mashups or covers where they put their own spin on it. They stuff I don't like so much is when they do a straight cover of the original song.

 

Here's another one I like...

 

Yeah...I've always said, if you are going to do a cover it must be 2 things.
1. Better than the original (otherwise what is the point)
2. Done differently

Here is a great example of this with what has become my favourite all time song "Song to the Siren"...Top in my top 50.
The first is by the writer Tim Buckley...Jeff Buckley's father. A single 12 string and lovely...But then the Cocteau Twins completely re-work the song but understand the sentiment and boost the message, making it the best example of the song.

I'm a Cocteau Twins fan, but I have to say that I prefer Tim Buckley's version better. Good choice on the painting, CAC.

your class is showing through....liking Cocteau twins and Tim Buckley...respect.

Lisbeth Fraser (Scottish) has the sort of voice that you can imagine a Siren to have....mesmerising...

 

Just love the "raw energy" of the early U2 more than the later production...I was also a teenager then...

Great cover and great voice (!!!!) although there are other versions like Soft cell and Rihanna, I think....What a great voice!

Just recently watched a document of Suzy Q and her career....

 

Speaking of their raw energy back when we were teenagers, it's hard to beat the Boy album.




This live version of "11 O'clock Tick Tock" gives a hint of the energy in their live performances back then...

Must admit that of the later production I find "Lemon" a gem....
