Sgt. Rock, Haunted Tank, Battlefield Action, Fightin' Army, Fightin' Marines, G.I. Combat. Then there were the various historical comics that told the story of a particular battle in one to six issues. The Nam was my favorite, but it lost it's magic when they drifted from the path that Doug Murray had laid, and brought in The Punisher. Covered Vietnam on a mostly monthly basis.
I really liked those comics they would have some off the wall stories like the one two soldiers jump in a hole for cover and another GI is there and starts telling them stories about robot soldiers he tells them three stories and then a grenade is thrown in and the guy dives on it and saves the others they turn the guy over and he's a robot. One guy tells the other no wonder he knew so much about robots. The twilight zone lol
Sgt. Rock comics? I remember 'em. Got a little tired of the good Sgt. knocking off tigers with his Thompson. Towards the end of the run the story always ended with the words, "Make War No More." I suppose it made them a little more PC.
Lol I don't remember that but I was a kid then, I do remember the one when he made Sgt and didn't feel he earned it because he was just advanced due to the former NCO KIAd. It funny that story was so much like from Lee Marvin, American Sgt vs German Sgt. But yeah Sgt Rock was the soldiers soldier. But I did like the twilight zone stories. Like the ship that wouldn't die till it took down the sub that killed it. Stuff like that.
Australians and Brits grew up on Commando Comics - Hundreds and hundreds of titles I'm sure you can still get them...they have large books now with 20 odd titles put together in themes...Some sad stories, stories of full on heroism, always action packed!
They look interesting wondering if I can find some online, I was just looking at some of the haunted tank series.
There was also Victor comic. The cover stories were all based on genuine actions. Fill yer boots here... The Victor Comic Web Site James Ward VC The Victor Book For Boys 155 Bty Sidi Nair The Victor Book For Boys He won the VC twice - Upham The Victor Book For Boys
If you find out what that story is all about, I'd be really interested--or failing that, at least what the artist was smoking!
Commando No 4336: Radar Raiders Story: Alan Hemus Art: Carlos Pino Cover: Ian Kennedy First Published: 1993 as No 2689 It wasn’t so long since U-Boat commander Elard Wolff and his crew had been welcomed in Japan as heroes. Yet here they were being force-marched at bayonet-point by Japanese soldiers. Germany and Japan were supposed to be allies, fighting on the same side — but the Japanese suspected these German sailors of spying. Obviously it was a ridiculous idea… or was it?
I always found it funny that the Germans could practically only say " Schweinehunde", " Mein Gott", "Achtung" or "Vorwärts"....
