"He was one of the last two surviving members of the Kieffer Commando. Hubert Faure, originally from Neuvic, had landed on the beaches of Normandy in June 1944. He died last night in Paris.
Neuvicois Hubert Faure died last night at the age of 106, in Paris . This resistance member born in Dordogne was one of the French soldiers who landed on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He was one of the last two members of the Kieffer commando still alive. Léon Gautier is now the last.
177 Marines of the Free French Forces, named after Lieutenant-Commander Philippe Kieffer, made up this group of volunteers, a commando team trained in Scotland.
Born May 28, 1914 in Neuvic, Hubert Faure had studied at the Lycée Saint Joseph in Sarlat. He enlisted in 1934, a year after the death of his father, a hairy man who died in 1933 from gas wounds from the Battle of Verdun. The Périgord who was about to celebrate his 107th birthday had been taken prisoner in 1940. He was able to escape. Hubert Faure joined the Free French forces in England in 1943.
The members of the Kieffer commando, integrated into the Royal Marine Commando N ° 4, are the only Frenchmen in uniform to have taken part in the French landing in Normandy .
On January 1, the veteran was raised to the dignity of Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, the highest distinction."
