Combat uniforms styles and ranks and profession (horseback, pilot, infantryman, etc.)

I'm working on a book about a fictional company in WW2 and I need help on the uniforms for the soldiers, sailors and airmen. If you know stuff about this, I'd be really grateful if you could help me.

 

I'm sure some could help if you could be a little more specific with what info you want...I'm guessing this will be an American company?

 

Here is a novel idea, Take a trip to the library and look through the thousands of books written on the history of military actions. The war was a WORLD war and uniforms were not uniform and sometimes not existent.(pilots in the Pacific flew in t-shirts and shorts if no clean flight suits were available). Plenty of info out there if you look.

Ummmm, not too many Companies has soldiers, sailors, and airmen.

Certainly Marine companies, especially rifle companies, had Marines and sailors, but probably not airmen.

And just what kind of company has your interest . . . infantry? armor? transportation? quartermaster? signal? chemical? military police? . . . or things that look like companies but are called something else such as artillery batteries or, yes, even cavalry troops? There's lots of branches to consider. Really, there are entire books, even multi volume works which can describe force structure. Some of those might be a good place to start before setting pen to paper so that some reading your tome in the future might get the idea you've some idea about that of which you write. You may wish with an expansive overview such as the 4 volume series on the U S Army Order of Battle 1919-1941 before moving down to company level, might give you an idea of how complicated thing could be.

Stirring airmen, be they enlisted crewmen, pilots, either enlisted or officer, or officer type crew of the non-pilot variety, bombardiers, navigators and such, plus your sailors and/or, even, naval officers into the mix would make even a fictitious "company" to be so unusual as to be beyond the real of plausibility. A little research would quickly make this obvious.

 

I need to know the uniforms so that when my Company meets other troops that their profession is reflected correctly in the uniform. All of the men in my company are infantry men.And thank you very much for your suggestions they are very helpful.

 

Yes. It will be an American infantry company but I'm trying to find out about the different types of uniforms so that when the company meets other troops, and no matter their ranking, profession or country, I can get the uniforms correct. I'm looking for the styles of the uniforms and the types of helmets and stuff like that
